DU: 4000 Extra Seats Added Under EWS Category; Cut-off to be Released Soon

The University of Delhi has raised the number of UG courses being offered in its affiliated colleges and universities. With this, the number of seats has also risen from 66,000 to 70,000.

Currently, there are 51 colleges and varsities that come under the University of Delhi. Dean of DU Admissions, Shobha Bagai mentions that the reason for the increment is the introduction of the EWS (Economically Weaker Section) category.

As per the earlier notice by the Central Government, it mentioned that every educational institution has to include extra seats above the approved seats. Following the order, DU increased the total number of seats by 10,000. 

Moreover, 10% of seats were reserved for the Economically Weaker Section students. As a result, this year also all the affiliated colleges and educational institutes will have to adjust extra 100-150 students.

The major drawback of such adjustments is poor infrastructure. This can hamper the reputation of the University. Many students face problems in getting their own space. Apart from this, the colleges also lack an adequate number of faculty members. This leads to a lack of proper attention to every student.

The COVID-19 has indicated many problems for the DU affiliated colleges and institutions. As the students have increased and space per student has decreased, following social distancing norms will be a tough task. But colleges are preparing for the reopening, following COVID guidelines.

However, as the country is opening up now after a nationwide lockdown imposed because of COVID 19, colleges also have to prepare for opening up while following all the social-distancing protocols. 

Since the Government of India has laid down the instructions to draft a separate reservation system for EWS, colleges are demanding government funding. They are requesting the government to provide funds to reciprocate the infrastructural problems and inadequate human resources.

The government has taken the statements of Deans of various colleges about the EWS and arrangement for extra students. 

The principal of one college stated that they have adequate space for accommodating extra students but the real problem is that they do not have additional benches for the extra students. Highlighting the same, he asked the government to provide some aid.

The college indicated that when it resumes the offline teaching, there will not be smooth conduct of lectures due to improper facilities.

The principal of the college was very gentle in the way that the government has increased the number of students. Apart from the infrastructural issues, he also pointed out problems like accommodation of girls and boys in the same room, etc.

For the DU admissions 2020, the first cut-off is set to be released on October 12. Soon the admission process and lecture commencement will take place.
