Transit Campus at Tech City, Bongora
The academic session is being conducted from a fully equipped transit campus developed by the Assam government at Tech City in Bongora. The state has invested nearly Rs 39 crore to renovate and upgrade the facility for the first cohort.
The transit campus houses modern classrooms, a library, and administrative offices. It also includes residential accommodation for faculty and staff along with hostel buildings for students. Academic activity will run from this site until the permanent campus is ready.
Permanent Campus at Palashbari
The permanent campus of IIM Guwahati is being built at Morabhita and Dighalkuchi villages under the Palashbari Revenue Circle in Kamrup district. The site spans 574 bighas of land allocated by the Assam government.
Construction of the permanent campus is expected to be completed within three years. Once ready, the institute will shift its full operations to the new site.
Why the Launch Matters for Northeast Students?
The launch marks the first time an IIM is functioning inside Assam. It brings a premier national management institute closer to students from the North Eastern Region.
Chief Minister Sarma described the event as a historic milestone for higher education in Assam. He also stated an aspiration that at least 50 per cent of seats in national institutions of excellence located in the state should be secured by students from Assam.
How Will Future Admissions to IIM Guwahati Work?
IIM Guwahati admits students to the MBA programme through the Common Admission Test (CAT) conducted by the IIMs. Aspirants must appear for CAT and clear the shortlisting criteria set by the institute.
Shortlisted candidates are then called for the further selection stages. Final admission is based on a composite score that follows the IIM selection framework.
IIM Guwahati is the 22nd IIM in the country and the first to be set up inside Assam. Its launch places a top-tier management school in the North East for the first time.
