The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras conducted an online Convocation for the first time in its history on October 25, 2020.
IIT Madras held its 57th convocation and the highlight of the event was the use of mixed reality technology which gave a touch of reality to the event.

The chief guest of the event was Prof. David J Gross, Nobel laureate and Chancellor's Chair of Theoretical Physics, University of California.
In his address, he stated that it is the beginning for the graduating candidates for the application of knowledge that they gained during their study.
The event was presided by Pawan Goenka, Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT Madras and Managing Director, Mahindra, and Mahindra.
Goenka stated, "COVID-19 has accelerated the rate of tech adoption across streams of life. Changes which would have taken 5-6 years have happened in just about 3-4 months"

Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director of IIT Madras awarded degrees to the graduate students. He stated that because of the "heroic effort" of the faculties, classes were completed on time.
Ramamurthi also stated that about 191 patents were filed during the year out of which 62 were international and 58 were granted to the institute.
1,909 students were awarded a total of 2,345 degrees in absentia through online mode using mixed reality technology.
Mixed reality combines the virtual world and the real world which creates visualizations.
For example, a student Rajat Vadiraj Dwaraknath bagged three prizes including the President of India gold medal seems to get the award personally but in reality, it was just a projection.
