IIT Madras develops microprocessor ‘MOUSHIK’ to aid Digital India Campaign

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras researchers are all set to actuate ‘MOUSHIK’ microprocessor. This indigenous microprocessor is developed under the central government's newly launched ‘Atma Nirbhar’ mission to boost Smart Cities that caters to the Digital India campaign.

‘MOUSHIK’ is a RISC-V microprocessor and third chip of the SHAKTI family. It is modelled and developed at Pratap Subrahmanyam Centre for Digital Intelligence and Secure Hardware Architecture (PS-CDISHA), IIT Madras.

“There are three steps involved in the making of a microprocessor, namely design, fabrication, and post-silicon boot-up. All three processes for MOUSHIK were undertaken in India,” said Prof Kamakoti Veezhinathan, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT-Madras.

MOUSHIK as System on Chip in major IoT devices  

Newly developed microprocessor ‘MOUSHIK’ will function as integral SOC in the IoT electronic devices. System on Chip (SOC) is designed to improve performance and to lessen semiconductor die and power consumption in devices.

Accordingly, ‘MOUSHIK’ microprocessor can also be included in all smart cards like credit cards, ID cards, debit cards, travel cards for metros, and driving licenses.

It will also be helpful for office management systems like attendance, personalized health management systems, consumer electronics surveillance, cameras, and safe locks. It can also be installed to boost the performance of Electronic voting machines.

Developing MOUSHIK Motherboard

The manufacturing of the motherboard and forging of the microprocessor’s motherboard was administered by ISRO. While the motherboard is designed by IIT Madras. “Shakthi MOUSHIK SOC will constitute the heart of an indigenously-developed motherboard called ‘Ardonyx 1.0’,” said Prof. Kamakoti.

The integrated circuit is designed specifically by Foundry at a comparatively low cost. Assembly and post-silicon boot-up were also completed at IIT-Madras.
