IITs in Partnership with NSDC Opens Doors for Students Studying in Tier 2 Tier 3 Colleges

New Delhi: Students studying in colleges of Tier-2 or Tier-3 towns have always aspired to study at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). IITs across the country- Kanpur, Patna, Guwahati, Ropar, and Mandi can now be the top choices for Tier-2 and Tier-3 graduates.

From the year 2024-25, students studying in Tier-2 or Tier-3 town colleges can get the tag of IIT by taking a minor specialization, a bachelor’s or master’s degree, or a diploma which is offered in partnership with The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC).

In the words of Mr. Tiwari, “IITs are encouraging those who want to pursue a short-term skilling program through Industrial Training Institute (ITI) or Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikar scheme student who will like to pursue a diploma program or certification from IITs. The skilling programs will be facilitated by the Skill India Digital Platform.

The core degree will be given by the university affiliated with the college, but there will also be a mention of a minor specialization from IIT. The course will depend on a credit-based system, where the specialization will be taking 10 to 18 credits.

In a four-year degree, a total of 160 credits will be required to receive a Bachelor of Science Degree from IIT. For those 160 credits, it is suggested to use Skill India Digital (SID) to offer an 18-credit skill component.

To receive an MTech, the student must complete 62 credits, out of which 12 credits of skill component are suggested to be delivered on the SID portal of NSDC.

According to the National Education Policy (NEP), the programs are designed with the provision of multiple exit and entry options. Candidates will be given the option to take a 12-month PG Diploma and opt out without choosing the MTech course.

For two-year MTech, students who enroll in a 12-month PG Diploma can extend the course to obtain an IIT master’s degree after completing the PG Diploma. The students who opt out after the initial semester of the PG Diploma can exit with a PG Certification.

Mr. Tiwari said, “Since these courses are to be offered in online mode, there is no capping on the admission intake but the admission has to take place through an online entrance examination”.
