The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) held a protest on 24 August where they demanded better mess facilities, phased return of students who had left the campus due to the pandemic, and that registrations be postponed.
A few students gathered outside the Dean of Students’ office after the joint secretary of the Students’ Union of JNU and the security convener had a discussion with the Dean of Students.

The JNUSU argued that mess fees cannot be paid until the students’ scholarships are given away properly. They reported that the Dean would speak to the higher authorities about extending the registration dates.
The Dean of Students has assured that breakfasts will be provided in hostels from September onwards.

During the discussion, the matter of the phased return of students was also raised, especially research scholars who are supposed to submit their papers in December and are not being granted any extension. The dean said that the demand is in process and the first batch of students will be recalled to the campus in September.
JNUSU said, “In addition, the administration will write to the Delhi government for providing testing and screening facilities for returning students.”
The JNUSU also demanded the use of open free spaces for quarantining students as and when necessary. It also put forward the students’ demand to refund 1,800 to 3,600 INR charged during registration for the Winter Semester 2020.
