NCERT Textbooks to be Available in Indian Sign Language for Hearing Impaired Students

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has decided to make textbooks and other education material available for deaf students in their sign language.

NCERT has collaborated with the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre (ISLRT) for the production of standard textbooks.

Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Thawar Chand Gehlot said, "The availability of NCERT textbooks in sign language will ensure that hearing impaired children can also access educational resources and even the teachers and hearing impaired community."

Children develop cognitive skills i.e. ability to think and remember during childhood therefore, it is necessary to provide them with quality education accordingly, said officials of the Ministry.

Till now the hearing impaired students used to study through a verbal and written basis but after the availability of the sign books, they will be able to improve the vocabulary and understand the concept altogether.

The Indian Sign Language Research And Training Centre (ISLRT) is a national institute of social justice and empowerment ministry, who is responsible for developing resources for the widespread use of Indian Sign Language in teaching and conducting research.
