NEET UG 2024 Controversy

New Delhi: Tamil Nadu State Legislative Assembly has unanimously passed the resolution against the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) on June 28, 2024. The assembly has also urged the Central Government to “immediately approve of T.N.’s NEET exemption bill” and “make necessary amendments to the National Medical Commission Act” in order to abolish NEET at the national level.

The resolution, introduced by Chief Minister MK Stalin, comes amid significant unrest over recent NEET-UG 2024 paper leaks and the abrupt postponement of the NEET-PG 2024 examination.

The resolution got widespread support from regional parties, including Manithaneya Makkal Katchi, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist). These parties join the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in their long-standing opposition to NEET, which they argue disadvantages students from rural and economically weaker backgrounds.

Moving the resolution in the assembly, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said the test is discriminatory and deprives an opportunity for rural and poor students to access medical education. “In the backdrop of several states opposing the exam, this House unanimously resolves that the Union Government should amend the National Medical Commission Act so that NEET is scrapped for the entire country,” the resolution said.

“It makes medical education inaccessible to the rural and poor students. It affects the medical services in rural and backward areas. It denies states their rights to admit students with plus two marks as the qualifying criteria,” Stalin said while passing the resolution.

The state assembly had earlier passed two resolutions - one in 2017 and another in 2021. Tamil Nadu has been against NEET since it was introduced in 2017.
