NEET UG 2027 Likely Over 5 to 6 Days at 1000 Centres in CBT Mode

The Union Ministry of Education (MoE) is planning a major National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2027 overhaul. The exam will shift to computer-based test (CBT) mode from 2027. It will run across nearly 1000 centres over 5-6 days.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) will conduct the revamped exam. Each centre will host about 500 candidates each day. This allows nearly 5 lakh students to appear daily.

The move follows recommendations of the K Radhakrishnan Committee. The panel was set up after the NEET UG 2026 paper leak. It flagged the OMR-based paper format as a security risk.

Why the Overhaul?

The NEET UG 2026 exam was hit by a paper leak scandal. The controversy led to nationwide protests and a Supreme Court hearing. It also forced NTA to hold a partial re-test for affected candidates.

A panel led by former ISRO chief K Radhakrishnan was then formed. The panel studied testing reforms across NTA exams. It recommended a shift to secure computer-based testing.

The 2026 NEET UG pen-and-paper exam also faced integrity concerns. A retest was held on June 21, 2026, with tighter security. Over 95,000 exam rooms used CCTV and 51,311 signal jammers.

How Will the New Format Work?

NEET UG 2027 will span 5 to 6 days instead of one. Multiple shifts will be conducted each day. NTA will use a normalisation process to keep scoring fair.

Nearly 1000 centres will be used across around 500 cities. Most centres will be at Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalayas. Some reputed private institutions may also serve as centres.

What Changes for Students?

The pen-and-paper OMR sheet will be replaced by an on-screen interface. Students will read questions and mark answers on a computer. The three-hour test length is expected to stay the same.

Candidates must now practise mock tests in CBT mode. Screen-based reading and time management skills will matter more. Schools and coaching centres may need to update their prep tools.

Why This Matters

NEET UG is India's largest single entrance exam. Over 22 lakh candidates appeared for it in 2026. CBT will be one of the biggest reforms in Indian medical testing.
