New AIIMS Branch set to be constructed in Madurai, says the Central Government

The Central Government has released a gazette notification regarding the establishment of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) branch in Madurai.

 AIIMS Madurai is to be established on a land area of over 222 acres at Thoppur, costing about  INR 1264 crore. The foundation stone for AIIMS Madurai was laid down by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January 2019.

The gazette was released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) suggested that in the exercise of the powers that are conferred by the proviso to sub-section (1) of section 3 of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Act, 1956 (25 of 1956), the Central Government hereby establishes the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences at Madurai in Tamil Nadu.

A media house was informed by Madurai MP Su Venkatesan, who said that this official notification by the central government is encouraging. This is a very special day for Madurai and the Southern districts. He also thanked the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for this gesture which is a boon to the region. 

S. Manimaran, The Chief coordinator of the AIIMS for Madurai Movement,  also expressed his approval when this announcement was made. 

He stated that since the AIIMS Madurai is to be constructed with a loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the building is to be constructed over a duration of 45 months after the release of the loan, the step should be taken to claim the loan without having to wait for too long.
