The University Grants Commission (UGC), a regulatory authority responsible for maintaining the standards of higher education in India, has issued a recent notification regarding the presence of counterfeit universities.

New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recently released a state-wise list of fake universities operating in the country. UGC has released a list of 20 fake universities operating in different states across India, with the highest number in Delhi, where eight such institute has been located.
The list consists of universities from several states from various states including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. The main objective of this list is to identify the fake institute and spread awareness among students and parents about their existence.
UGC Secretary Manish Joshi stated, “I would like to inform you that your institution figures in the list of fake Universities, as the institution is not a ‘University’ within the meaning of Section 2(f) or Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, but engaged in the business of conferring degrees or using the word ‘University’ with its name to defraud and cheat innocent students by awarding fake degrees. It has become a matter of concern as many students are becoming victims of the fraudulent act of your institution.”
