University Grants Commission (UGC) issued directives on Tuesday to conduct final-year exams by September-end. Following which, education minister of Maharashtra wrote to the centre seeking uniform guidelines for awarding degrees on the basis of an alternative formula.
"I am of the opinion that the UGC's revised guidelines are not mandatory but an advisory like the earlier ones," Samant said in his letter.
The minister highlighted the state’s stand for not conducting exams in view of the pandemic and based on the review done by the disaster management authority.
The revised guidelines of UGC has pushed lakhs of students in a state of quandary. As per sources, there are close to 10 lakh students are in the final year across 11 state universities. These students are in a state of confusion and fear due to the conduct of the exam.
Similar is the case in the state of Rajasthan where the higher education department has said that it will try to convince UGC to exempt them from holding exams.
"Our department will examine the UGC guidelines. At some time, we will apprise UGC about the Covid-19 situation in the state and will convince them to give us exemption from holding exams. I am sure they will listen to us and other states where the situation is worse than us," said Bhanwar Singh Bhati, state higher education minister.
As per the education minister, the exams were cancelled after evaluating the situation which seemed unfavourable for holding exams in the next one or two months.
Furthermore, he also said that to appear for exams, thousands of students would require to travel to appear for exams as many students from different cities/states have moved to their respective homes in view of the lockdown.
