Which should I choose, mechanical engineering at new IITs or engineering design at IIT Madras?
Engineering Department usually has more companies visiting for placements than IIT Roorkee and the condition is worse in new IITs. The average package is also at par with the packages of most branches.
In fact, any branch at an old and big IIT like Madras is better than CS at new IITs. the packages of CS at new IITs are on the same level as packages offered in normal branches of old IITs. Moreover, the campus life and exposure offered in big old IITs can never be compared to the new IITs which are still struggling to reach IIT standards in terms of their infrastructure and placements.
Secondly, Engineering Design is not completely mechanical, but rather a combination of electrical and mechanical. This department has the highest number of labs and assignments. and thus a lot of assignments.
Overall, the coursework pertaining to the department is full of rigor and requires much more effort than other branches. If you are ready for that kind of commitment, go for it but if you eventually want to do coding, chose an easier branch that will give you enough time to learn to code.

What is the placement process at SPJIMR, Mumbai for the PGDM program?
There are mainly two placements: Internships Placements (called the Autumn placements) and Final Placements.
Internship placements: These placements take place usually in the month of July and August during the second year. Students end their internship by October. The FMCG companies visit for Marketing and Operation placements together. Finance and Information Management internships are more like a rolling process.
Final Placements: The final placements occur usually in the month of December. At this time, all the PPO results from internships are out and almost 50% of the batch has already been placed. SPJIMR does not encourage lateral placements and such cases are dealt with individually. My brother is an alumnus of IIIT Hyderabad and even today he says that no doubt IIIT Hyderabad has excellent placements but that does not mean it can be compared to institutes of national importance like IITs and NITs that have been there for ages. Anyone making such a comparison isn’t aware of the brand value IITs have both within and outside India. Placements are not a direct reflection of the quality of education.
The truth is IIIT Hyderabad is a blossoming institute and is nowhere comparable to the top IITs and NITs at least as of now.
