Mumbai University (MU) college transfer after 1st semester:

college change within Mumbai University is theoretically possible but practically very difficult:

  • each affiliated college has independent admissions and seats. there's no central transfer mechanism
  • a student can apply for inter-college transfer if their current college and the target college both agree, and there's a vacant seat in the target college in their course-year combination
  • procedure: get a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your current college ? apply to target college with NOC, proof of admission, marksheets ? target college grants admission if vacancy exists and they approve
  • colleges are under no obligation to accept transfers and most don't have formal mechanisms for it
  • for government-funded/autonomous colleges, transfer may be even more restricted

practically: mid-program college transfers within MU are very rare. it's easier to change college at the start of a new academic year (1st semester) than mid-way. contact MU's academic section and your college directly for the most current policy. many students simply complete their current program and apply to better institutions for PG.

College transfer after 1st semester at Mumbai University — a realistic and nuanced answer.

Official position: Mumbai University does have a college transfer provision, but it is extremely difficult to execute in practice for engineering students.

When transfer is officially possible:

  • Transfers are processed at the beginning of the 2nd year (after 1st year completion), NOT after just 1st semester.
  • Transfer requires: Vacant seat in the target college's same branch, NOC from current college, application to Mumbai University through the transfer process.
  • Must have NO active backlogs at the time of transfer application.

The practical reality:

  • Good MU engineering colleges (VJTI, COEP, SPIT, etc.) almost never have vacant seats to absorb transfers — they're always at capacity.
  • Transfers typically only happen to colleges at the same or lower demand tier.
  • Application window is limited — usually July-August for transfers.

After 1st semester specifically: No, Mumbai University does NOT permit college transfers after just one semester. The process is intended for year-end, not mid-year. You must complete at least 1 full academic year (2 semesters of 1st year) before applying for transfer.

If your reason for wanting to transfer is poor college quality/infrastructure: consider instead using the current year to build your profile (GitHub, internships, certifications) and plan for higher education options.

B.M.S from University of Mumbai

Yes, Mumbai University allows students to change college after the first semester. The rules for changing college are different for different courses. You need to give a valid reason. You can’t change your college if you have any remaining KT or defaulters.

Before applying to another college, you also need to get a NOC from your current college.

Studied at University of Mumbai

Mumbai University allows such changes. One of my friends was studying in K.J. Somaiya college till the 4th semester of his BSc program and then switched to St. Xavier's College for semesters 5th and 6th.

It is important to note that Mumbai University does allow the candidate to change their college, however, the college that is your target may refuse to accept you. The college might have their reason to refuse the seat. So, at first, you need to ask if you will be allowed to get a seat in the college.

Before applying formally to the other college, you should get a NOC from your current college stating that they do not have any Objections to you seeking admission elsewhere. Using this certificate, you can apply for admissions to the college of your choice. You should not have any backlogs from your 1st Semester.

It would be really helpful if both the colleges are affiliated with the University of Mumbai. You should check if this facility is extended to different University systems as well before applying. There will be a lot of paperwork to do.
