The University of Mumbai also known as Mumbai University (MU) is one of the oldest Universities in India. It was established way back in 1857. It has done a tremendous effort in improving its ranking. For the first time in three years, it succeeded in gaining a place in the list of top 100 Universities published by NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework). It was ranked 81 with a total score of 40.03 in 2019 NIRF University ranking.

A total of 781 colleges are affiliated to this University. Some of the colleges affiliated to the University performed well in rankings published by Outlook India. Dwarkadas J.Sanghvi College Of Engineering(SVKM's) was ranked 31 by Outlook India and ranked 195 by NIRF. 

As per QS World University ranking, it has maintained its position for three years and has been ranked #801-1000 by QS World University Ranking. It has been degraded by 7 positions in QS BRICS ranking and has been ranked 89 in 2019 whereas it was ranked 82 in 2018 and 68 in 2017. It was ranked 1001+ by THE (Times Higher Education) World University ranking.

The University of Mumbai has been ranked so low due to various factors such as a low number of citations and research, a low number of foreign students.
