Course Curriculum Overview

4

The course curriculam, as fixed by the University, is pretty comprehensive. It includes all the relevant and important subjects, divided into 6 semesters, with necessary weightage given to practials/projects whenever required. Since LL.B is a vast course, the subjects are diverse and are well spread to cover all the important legal fields, from property laws, company laws, torts, to criminal law and human rights. The teaching methods adopted are mostly classroom based and theoritical, although there are court visits organised from time to time. However, the practial exposure, particularly with respect to tasks like drafting, is still lacking. Exams are held at the end of each semester, with approximately 5/6 months gap (Normally, in August and in January/February). The internal for that semester is conducted in one sitting almost a month before the Semester exams.

Fees and Financial Aid

When I took admission in 2022, for 3-Year LL.B (H), the fee srtucure of the said course was Rs.37,800 per semester (6 semesters). The total fees are Rs. 2,40,000 (Approx.) The current fee structure is as follows: Tuition fees: Rs. 40,000 Admission fees: Rs. 7,000 Development fees: Rs. 20,000 Library fees: Rs. 2000 Library caution deposit fees: Rs. 1000 Student council fees: 300 The fees are same for all categories. The fees have increased since my admission in 2022. Student Credit Card scheme is availabe, as per Govt. of West Bengal.

Campus Life

2

The annual college fest is held every year, in December. Free legal-aid camps are held frequently in the college campus, where students can go and attend. Festivals like Saraswati Pujo are duly organised inside the college, where students are invited to attend. Teachers' Day Programme is duly observed every year, with students participating in the staged functions, like singing, dancing, recitation, etc. Sports and games are lacking within the campus. The classrooms are generic, with white boards and wooden desks and benches. There are not much advanced technology present in the classrooms. The college has a descent library, with a wide variety of books available to read and rent.

Admission

Since I was looking for 3-Year LL.B (H), my options were already limited as most law colleges in the city offer 5-Year LL.B course. I shortlised Sarsuna Law College, Kolkata Police Law College, Kingston Law College, Sister Nivedita School of Law Although I enquired about the course, I decided against admitting in Kingston Law College as it was very far from my home. I was ineligible for admission in Kolkata Police Law College, as I had no family member (parents) employed in the Kolkata Police. The fee structure of Sister Nivedita School of Law was quite high and against my liking. Sarsuna Law College had a descent fee structure compared to the rest, and also happened to be within reasonable distance from my house. As a result, I took the decision to get admitted in this college. The admission procedure is fairly simple. It is merit-based, as per your overall graduation marks (CGPA). Higher CGPA ensures greater chance of securing admission in the college, although the cut-off does not tend to be very high.

Faculty

5

My batch strenght is around 180 students. The faculty is of the required strentgh, with professors undertaking different courses and subjects, as per semester requirements. The teaching faculty is of very high quality, and is very friendly and approachable. The non-teaching staff are very polite and cooperative too! There is one internal exam (one in each semester), which includes all the subjects of that semester, and this internal exam is taken on the same day for all the subjects. The total time alloted for this internal exam (all subjects included) is 2.5 hours. The full marks of each subject is 20 marks. The semester exams are conducted at the end of each semester, for each subjects, based on the schedule released by the University. The full marks for each subject is 80 marks. Togeter, 80 (semester exam) + 20 (internal exam) = Total 100 marks. The exam pattern is generally straightforward for each paper. Students have to attempt a total of 5 questions (carrying 16 marks each) out of a number of questions provided (choice available).

Night Life

2

There is no gym in the college. There is a canteen but it almost always remains closed. The libarary is loaded with books and always accesible for the students. The surrounding area of the college is pretty dull, but very serene, with lack of population and pollution. There is Sarsuna College, just opposite to this college, this adds to the crowd outside the college on working days. There is a vast park, with a lake, within 5 mins from the college, and it is a lovely place to hand out with friends, have picnics, relax, and unwind. The roads around the college are narrow but lacking in traffic. This makes walking comfortable and safe. However, the entire place may get badly waterclogged during the rainy season, as the drainage of the area is very poor. Although it is a very safe place, I can presume the lack of population and vibrancy may make it uncomfortable to roam around at night. Howewver, this is just an assumption as I have not stayed at the college beyond sunset.

The college doesnt provide any internship from its side nor does it provide any good placement. However about 50% of the students get placed by applying in off campus places. The teachers help us find good law firms for internships though.
