Chevening received more than 70,000 applications for a single cohort, and its own reading committees say most rejections are avoidable. Applicants list job titles instead of results. They copy course descriptions from university websites. India runs the largest Chevening programme in the world, with over 3,900 scholars and fellows since 1983.

You need Indian citizenship, 2,800 hours of work experience and three UK course choices. Ineligible applications are rejected before any human reads your essays. The work experience must come after your undergraduate degree ends. Chevening counts 2,800 hours as roughly two years at 35 hours a week. Full-time jobs, part-time jobs, voluntary work and internships all count. You can enter up to fifteen separate work periods in the form.
Your undergraduate degree must be finished at least two years before the deadline. Chevening states that degrees completed after October 2024 do not qualify for this cycle. The certificate itself is only needed by your interview date. Holding a master's already does not block you from applying.
Your three choices must all meet the same conditions.
Courses that do not qualify include part-time and distance learning options. PhD, DPhil and research-based MRes courses are excluded. January intakes are excluded. Courses with more than one month of study outside the UK are also excluded.
The whole application is online, free, and built around four essays. Chevening does not charge anything and does not work with paid agents. You start by registering your email address and mobile number. Next comes an eligibility checker with three attempts. Passing it gives you a unique access code. That code is the only way back into your application, so save it.
The four essays cover leadership and influence, networking, your reasons for choosing your courses and your career plan. The system logs you out after fifteen minutes of inactivity. Write your answers offline first, then paste them in.
References work differently from most UK applications. You name two referees now and upload their letters only if you reach the interview stage. The letters must reach the system at least seven working days before your interview. Miss that window and your application is dropped. If your reference letter is in Hindi or any regional language, then you must add a notarised English translation. That means asking your referee early, because notarisation adds days you will not have in October.
Chevening on AI use: generating essay answers with AI tools is strictly prohibited. Chevening runs software to detect plagiarism, fraud and AI-written text.
Must Check,
Selection runs in four stages across roughly nine months. Nothing is scored on academic ranking alone. Applications are first sifted against eligibility rules from October 2026. Independent reading committees then assess every eligible application between mid-October 2026 and January 2027. The British High Commission builds a shortlist in mid-February 2027. Interviews follow in March and April 2027.
| Stage | When it happens |
|---|---|
| Eligibility sift | From October 2026 |
| Reading committee scoring | Mid-October 2026 to January 2027 |
| Shortlist released | Mid-February 2027 |
| Interviews at British High Commission | March to April 2027 |
| Results announced | From mid-June 2027 |
Interview candidates must upload documents at least seven working days ahead. That means photo identification, your undergraduate certificate and both reference letters. The panel scores you against the same four criteria used by the reading committees.
What Chevening reading committees flag most often: applicants describe leadership instead of proving it. Many write "we" instead of "I". Others pick universities using rankings rather than course modules.
Chevening also wants your plan to connect with UK priority areas. Those are growth and prosperity, climate resilience, security and stability, and inclusive societies. Short, mid and long-term goals with measurable outcomes score better than ambition alone. Competition is real, with more than 1,000 awards a year against tens of thousands of applications.
A full Chevening award covers tuition, living costs, flights and your visa fee for twelve months. The award cannot be extended beyond twelve months except in rare cases.
The stipend rate depends on whether your university sits inside or outside London. Chevening reviews these rates every year and does not publish them publicly. Your Conditional Award Letter and Final Award Letter confirm the exact figure. Payments arrive by the end of each month for the month ahead.
Most UK universities also contribute at least 20% towards Chevening tuition fees. If a university refuses that contribution, then you may be moved to your next course choice.
Scholars may keep additional funding worth up to GBP 10,000 (around INR 12.9 lakh) with written approval. Other UK government funding is not allowed alongside Chevening. You may also stay on your existing Indian salary during the year. Budget separately for daily costs using a realistic breakdown of monthly living expenses in the UK. Home Office rules still cap term-time work at 20 hours a week. Vacation work is capped at 40 hours. Scholars must also stay inside the UK for all but 30 days of the award.

Chevening rewards evidence, not ambition. Indian applicants who win it usually spend months building four essays around measurable results. They pick three courses that clearly serve one career plan. They also accept the two-year return clause as a genuine commitment. Applicants who treat Chevening as a discount on UK tuition rarely reach the interview stage.
