The Fulbright-Nehru Masters Fellowships are awarded to Indian students who exhibit outstanding performance in academics and wish to pursue a Master's degree or research in selected programs such as Economics, Education, Administration, etc, at some of the selected Colleges and Universities of the USA. This fellowship is for 1 year and 2- year program of study.

It is given to highly motivated students who have completed an equivalent bachelor's degree, have a minimum of 3 years of work experience and are committed to returning to India, to contribute to the Country's development.

The benefits covered under this Fellowship are:

Eligibility Criteria

An applicant should fulfill the given Academic Eligibility criteria, to qualify for the Fulbright-Nehru Masters Fellowships:

  • Must have completed a U.S. bachelor's degree or its equivalent from a recognized Indian university with a minimum of 55% marks.
  • Should not be enrolled in any other degree/program in the USA.

Apart from the academic qualifications listed above, the applicant must also fulfill the following requirements too.

  • Citizenship: Must be Indian national
  • Skills: Leadership skills and community service experience.
  • Professional work experience: a minimum of 3-years full-time (paid)in the related field of study.
  • Must be proficient in the English language.
  • The applicant must return to their own country after completion of the fellowship.
  • If the applicant is employed, then he/she must submit the FNMasters Employer's Endorsement Form that will indicate his leave period for the fellowship and study.

Application Process

Fulbright-Nehru Masters Fellowships applications are accepted through an online process. As a prospective candidate, you have to complete the online Application form available here

Applicants must go through the Instruction form and keep documents ready beforehand. This will help them to submit the form easily.

The step by step procedure to fill Fulbright Nehru Master’s fellowship is given below.

Step I: Create an account to start the application.

Step II: Carefully read and review applicant instructions.

Step III: Fill the application form and upload the necessary documents.

Step IV: Submit the form after uploading all the documents.

Review the entire application before submitting it. The application should be free of grammatical and spelling errors.

Documents Required :

Along with the applications, an applicant has to submit the following documents:

  • Academic transcripts (scanned) from previous institutions
    • Accompanied by certified English translations.
  • Minimum 3 Letters of recommendations
    • Professional and academic references for PG
  • Statement of purpose
  • Updated Resume
  • English Language Proficiency
  • A copy of passport

Selection Process

The candidate did not need to apply separately to U.S. institutions, this is done by IE/Fulbright Program, which will send their applications to four different institutions.

The awardees for the Fulbright Scholarship are selected based on their overall performance in academics, work/experience skills, competency, skills and experience in community service. The selection committee also reviews the CV and essay submitted by the student, at the time of application.

After a careful examination of all these, the candidates are shortlisted and are informed by the USIEF thereafter.

Timeline and Placement Process for the Fellowship:

Mid-August Short-listed candidates are Interviewed in Delhi
End-August USIEF notifies the principal and alternate nominees for taking tests such as TOEFL & GRE
October USIEF forwards applications for approval and placement

Grant Details

The Fulbright-Nehru master's Fellowships provide grants to students enrolled in the Master’s Program. It covers tuition fees and basic living expenses.

The scholarship does not cover overall costs, therefore the scholar may need additional grant benefits with some other resources also.

Terms and Conditions of Fulbright-Nehru Research Fellowships 2020

  • The fellowship does not provide any financial aid for dependents.
  • The Applicant must return to work in their home country, after the completion of their master's course or Research.
  • The benefit of the fellowship will not be extended after completion of the actual study i.e. a maximum of 2 years
  • Fulbright-Nehru applications are submitted online, otherwise stated.
  • The applicant can apply for fellowship only under the Fulbright-Nehru category.
  • No application will be taken into consideration after the deadline.
  • Extension/ Transfer of Visa sponsorship is not permitted.
  • Plagiarism in the application form will lead to disqualification.
