Hira and Kamal Ahuja Award is a type of financial need award or bursary that values up to 6000 USD awarded annually to a graduate student registered full time in a Master’s or Doctoral program in the Faculty of Engineering. Students with good academic performance and in need of financial help are considered for this award by the University of Waterloo. For the application to be considered, the students are required to complete the Graduate Student Award Application form available on the website and demonstrate their cultural contributions to the Indian community.

The number or value of awards changes from year to year. Students who pursue Master’s and Doctoral degree programs at the University of Waterloo are eligible for this award.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible candidates must be full-time masters or doctoral students in the Faculty of Engineering with good academic performance. Other requirements to be eligible for the scholarship are as follows :

  • Must be a Canadian Citizen/Permanent Resident, also an Ontario resident.
  • Must apply to the Ontario Student Assistant Program (OSAP) for the term in which the award is due and provide proof of their OSAP Funding Summary.

Note: If a student has been restricted from applying to OSAP then they must provide evidence that they are restricted.

  • Eligible candidates must be in need of financial help. From the budget specified within the Graduate Student Award application, their “Current term expenses” must exceed their “Current term income”. All amounts that are mentioned will be reviewed and only standard expenses will be allowed.
  • Students must demonstrate their cultural contribution to the Indian community in the personal letter as a part of their application.

Application Process

Candidates are required to follow the steps to apply for Graduate Award Application are listed below:

  • Complete the Graduate Student Award application
  • Attach required documentation as mentioned in the application form.
  • Submit your completed application package to Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs (GSPA) before the application deadline.
  • The application deadline for the same is October 01.

Students who wish to avail of the benefits of scholarship should also know about the admission process at the University of Waterloo.

Application to Waterloo (by International Students) can be made through OUAC (Ontario Universities Application Centre). Before filling this form, candidates must check whether they meet the admission requirements or not.

Within 2 weeks of receiving the application, the university will send instructions for further steps. These instructions will be sent through email, from the address myapplication@waterloo.ca.

  • After this, candidates will need to create a Guest Account on the university servers. Candidates then need to upload the required documents and will help them check the application status.
  • Candidates can then use the ‘Application Information Form’, to further strengthen the chances of their admission.
  • International Candidates have to upload the official transcripts of their academic certificates, along with their English Proficiency Test Scores.
  • Selected candidates will be sent the application offer.
  • Candidates can log in to their OUAC account to check the offer. Candidates need to accept the offer within deadlines given, to be considered for further process.
  • Selected (international) candidates then need to apply for Study Permit and submit it to the university after they get it.

Selection Process

The selection process takes place once the application is received by the university.

  • The application is mandatory for the selection process to take place.
  • Student applications with good academic results and demonstration of their cultural responsibility to the Indian community will be considered first and will also stand a chance to get selected into the university soon.
  • The selection process will take place with the application review followed by the interview.
  • Selected candidates will be intimated through email.

Grant Details

Hira and Kamal Ahuja Award of 6000 USD is given exclusively to the meritorious students who are keen on demonstrating their cultural contribution to the Indian community. The best part about the grant is, it is awarded to the deserving candidates who provide evidence of their financial situation. The scholarship must be applied for the fall term.

This grant came into existence because of the donation from Professor Hira Ahuja, a Waterloo Engineering alumnus to encourage students to pursue graduate studies.

Only the candidates with Canadian citizenship or permanent residents can apply for this. All the students are required to submit the grant application by October 01, 2020, to be considered for this award.
