What Is Adaptive Testing in the Digital SAT?

Adaptive testing means the exam changes based on your performance while you are still taking it.

In the Digital SAT, this happens at the module level, not question by question. Each section has 2 modules. The first module has a mix of easy, medium, and hard questions. Based on how you do in Module 1, the system decides the difficulty of Module 2.

This is called Multistage Adaptive Testing (MST).

How the Two-Module System in the Digital SAT Works

Each section of the Digital SAT is divided into 2 equal-length modules:

• Module 1: Contains a broad mix of easy, medium, and hard questions, and
• Module 2: Either harder or easier, depending on your Module 1 performance.

There is a 10-minute break between the Reading and Writing section and the Math section.

What Happens After SAT Module 1?

Your performance in Module 1 is assessed at the end of that module. The system then routes you to one of two versions of Module 2:

• Higher-difficulty module, if you performed well in Module 1, OR
• Lower-difficulty module, if you struggled in Module 1

You do not choose this. The system decides it for you automatically.

This routing happens separately for each section. So your Math module difficulty is independent of your Reading and Writing performance.

Does a Harder SAT Module 2 Mean a Better Score?

Yes, getting the harder second module is a good sign. It means you did well in Module 1.

Students who get the harder Module 2 have the opportunity to score higher on that section. Students routed to the easier Module 2 are limited in how high they can score.

According to the College Board, the scoring takes into account:

• The difficulty of the questions you answered.
• Whether your answers were correct.
• The module path you were placed on.

So two students can answer the same number of questions correctly but get different scores, because they were on different difficulty paths.

How Are SAT Questions Arranged Within Each Module?

Within each module, questions are arranged from easiest to hardest within their content domain groups.

For the Reading and Writing section, questions are grouped by 4 content domains:

• Information and Ideas
• Craft and Structure
• Expression of Ideas
• Standard English Conventions

For the Math section, questions cover:

• Algebra
• Advanced Math
• Problem-Solving and Data Analysis
• Geometry and Trigonometry

Most questions are multiple choice. Some Math questions require you to type in your own answer (called student-produced response questions).

What is the Total SAT Score Range?

The Digital SAT gives you 3 scores:

• Total SAT Score: 400-1600
• Reading and Writing Section Score: 200-800
• Math Section Score: 200-800

Your score report also shows:

• A score range: how much your score might vary across different test administrations
• Percentile rankings: how your score compares to other test-takers
• Knowledge and Skills breakdown: your performance across 8 content areas (4 in Reading and Writing, 4 in Math)

SAT scores are available online 2-4 weeks after the test date.
