SOP Sample for Music

Since I was a young boy, I developed an interest in the field of music and singing as I saw my father practice for several hours a day for his on-stage performances. My father is a trained vocalist and I used to follow him to his concerts and even take part as chorus or second lead singer. Over the years, I practised with my father and learned several Indian classical ragas and raginis. Indulging in music and singing encouraged me to pursue a career in music and thus I completed a Bachelor of Music (BMus) from Rabindra Sangeet College, West Bengal.

In my college years, I got an opportunity to dive deep into subjects such as music composition, the history of Indian music, music and its form, etc. These courses allowed me to learn more about voice modulation, range variation, etc. as well as improved my patience, dedication, and confidence as a vocalist. In the final year, I represented my college in the National Sangeet Smarat competition, in which vocalists and musicians from all Indian institutions took part. Some of the leading musicians were appointed as judges including the likes of Pt. Raj Verma and Ustad Barkat Ali Khan. My hard work and ingenuity paid off as I proudly secured the first position among numerous participants in the competition and won the Sangeet Samrat award.

Obviously, the vocalist was someone else but my performance on that day was appreciated. Therefore, I worked as a percussionist until the lead percussionist was available, making me an expert in this field. This experience also developed various abilities in me including adaptability, active listening, and timekeeping. After actively working as a vocalist and percussionist for almost 6 years, I figured out that I needed to take on more challenging roles in this field in order to achieve my goals.

My short-term goal is to pursue a career as a vocalist and my long-term aspiration is to open a music academy, with my father, and make a professional musical group and represent my country on an international level. I am particularly interested in exploring the intersection of Western music and Indian compositions as I believe the coming together of these two would spread the idea of diversity. It would also create mass awareness regarding the proverb “art/music has no language, boundary, or culture”.
