University of Aberdeen admissions run through UCAS for undergraduate courses that need a Class XII floor of 75% and through Aberdeen’s own Direct Applicant portal for postgraduate courses that ask for a Bachelor’s degree at 60% or above from a state or central university.

  • Primary intake September 2027 (UG): UCAS equal consideration deadline 15 January 2027, 18:00 UK.
  • Base tuition £11,100 to £31,000 (₹14.33 to ₹40.03 Lakhs) for PG and £20,800 to £50,100 (₹26.86 to ₹64.68 Lakhs) for UG, plus one UCAS application fee of £34.50 (₹4,455) for UG. No application fee for direct PG applications.
  • Class XII 75% (with 80% English) for UG and Bachelor’s 60% for PG from state or central universities. IELTS floor 6.0 UG and 6.5 PG overall.
  • Acceptance rate around 78%, placing Aberdeen among the more accessible of the UK’s ancient universities.

Popular routes for Indian students include MSc Petroleum Engineering, MSc Data Science, MSc Renewable Energy Engineering, and the MBA at the Business School, all September-loaded. Aberdeen’s Indian applications grew visibly after the UK Graduate Route was retained, and student sentiment tracks that: solid teaching, expensive city, cold winters. Broader course, ranking, and campus context sits on our Overview of the University of Aberdeen page.

Admission Status: Open. UCAS submissions for September 2027 undergraduate entry opened on 1 September 2026 through the UCAS 2027 cycle, with the equal consideration deadline on 15 January 2027 (18:00 UK). Aberdeen’s Direct Applicant portal for postgraduate September 2027 entry is also live, and the smaller January 2027 PG intake closes 30 November 2026 for visa applicants. The applicable application fee is the UCAS £34.50 (₹4,455) for undergraduate. No application fee for direct PG submissions.

University of Aberdeen Application Deadlines for 2027 Entry

Aberdeen runs two live intake cycles for Indian applicants right now. The September 2027 intake is the primary window and carries almost every taught programme. The January 2027 intake is a smaller, faculty-restricted window that stays useful for MSc Data Science, MSc Information Technology, MSc Finance, and select business and health masters. Undergraduate applications route through UCAS. Postgraduate applications go direct via Aberdeen’s Direct Applicant portal at abdn.ac.uk/apply. Deadlines below are drawn from the Aberdeen India entry page and the January 2027 PG key dates page.

Aberdeen’s primary intake for Indian students is September, where most taught masters and every undergraduate course open. The January 2027 window carries a limited slate.

Currency note: All ₹ figures in this article use £1 = ₹129.13, the live mid-market rate on 15 September 2026. Live rates may vary, so confirm with your bank before remitting.

University of Aberdeen Eligibility for Indian Students

Aberdeen’s eligibility floor sits at Class XII 75% for most undergraduate degrees and a three or four year Bachelor’s at 60% from a state or central university for taught masters. Business, Biomedical, and Law degrees demand higher scores. The IELTS floor is 6.0 for undergraduate and 6.5 for postgraduate, with a 6.0 minimum in the Writing component at both levels.

Undergraduate academic floor by faculty:

  • Arts: Class XII 75% overall with 80% in English.
  • Science: Class XII 75% overall, plus 75% in two sciences or Mathematics and one science.
  • Engineering: Class XII 75% overall with 75% in Mathematics and Physics.
  • Biomedical Sciences: Class XII 80% overall with 80% in two sciences.
  • Law (LLB): Class XII 80% overall plus 80% in English.
  • Advanced Entry to Year 2: Class XII 80%+ overall with 85%+ in relevant subjects.

Postgraduate academic floor by institution type:

  • State or central universities: Bachelor’s at 60%. 55% accepted from IITs, IIMs, University of Mumbai, Delhi, and Calcutta.
  • Private or deemed universities: Bachelor’s at 65%.
  • LLM (Law): Bachelor’s at 55%.
  • Business School (MBA and MSc business): UK Honours equivalent Bachelor’s, which maps to a strong 60% or above.

Standard English test minimums accepted for taught degrees (fuller scale in each programme table below):

  • IELTS Academic: UG 6.0 overall (Writing 6.0), PG 6.5 overall (Writing 6.0).
  • TOEFL iBT (pre-January 2026 format): UG 78 overall, PG confirm per programme.
  • PTE Academic: UG 59 overall, PG 62 overall.
  • Duolingo English Test: UG 105 overall, PG 120 overall.
  • Cambridge C1/C2: UG 169 overall, PG 176 overall.

University of Aberdeen IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

Two waiver routes commonly clear the English requirement for Indian applicants and are worth checking before booking an IELTS slot.

  • Class XII English at 80%: An Indian Class XII English score of 80% from CBSE, ICSE, or a recognised state board within the last 10 years is accepted as an English qualification for undergraduate entry. The 80% English floor does not apply to MBChB Medicine or PhD entry.
  • Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter: Applicants with a full Bachelor’s or Master’s taught and assessed in English at an approved Indian university can submit an official MOI letter in place of a test score. This is Aberdeen’s most-used waiver for taught PG applicants.

Insider note: The MOI waiver is decision-friendly for state and central university graduates, but Aberdeen still requires the letter on official letterhead, signed and stamped, confirming English medium across all years. Photocopies of syllabi will not clear it.

University of Aberdeen PG Programs and English Scores

Aberdeen’s taught masters run for 12 months full-time and open primarily in September, with select programmes taking a January cohort. Base tuition sits between £11,100 and £31,000 (₹14.33 to ₹40.03 Lakhs) per year for taught PG, with Business School and engineering programmes at the upper end. For a course-wise fees breakdown and living-cost split, see the course-wise fees breakdown on our fees page. Eligibility and English figures below are drawn from each programme’s own entry page.

University of Aberdeen UG Programs and Class XII Cut-offs

Aberdeen’s undergraduate degrees run four years for a Scottish Honours track and five years for MBChB Medicine. Base tuition ranges from £20,800 to £50,100 (₹26.86 to ₹64.68 Lakhs) per year, with Medicine at the top of the band. Every UG course routes through UCAS and shares the 15 January 2027 equal consideration deadline, apart from Medicine which closes 15 October 2026.

ProgrammeDurationMinimum EligibilityEnglish Req. Min.
MBChB Medicine5 yearsClass XII 80%+ overall, 80%+ in two sciences, plus UCATIELTS 6.0

Undergraduate applicants scoring Class XII 80%+ overall with 85%+ in relevant subjects can request advanced entry directly into Year 2, which shortens the degree by a year.

University of Aberdeen MBA Admission

The Aberdeen MBA sits inside the Business School and opens in September only. It is a 12-month full-time programme aimed at applicants with 3 years or more of professional experience. Base tuition sits at the top of the taught PG band, close to £29,000 to £31,000 (₹37.45 to ₹40.03 Lakhs) per year, subject to the current fee year. There is no GMAT wall for most Indian applicants who bring a strong Bachelor’s plus quality work experience, but the admissions team can request a GMAT or GRE score if the transcript signal is thin.

University of Aberdeen MBA Work Experience Rule

The stated minimum is 3 years post-Bachelor’s experience. In practice, Indian applicants admitted to recent cohorts trend toward 4 to 6 years across consulting, energy, IT services, and banking. A Bachelor’s below 60% can still surface if experience is unusually strong.

University of Aberdeen MBA Interview

Shortlisted applicants are invited to a video interview with the MBA director, usually within 3 weeks of a completed file. Questions test career motivation, energy-transition awareness, and reasons for Aberdeen over other UK MBAs.

Insider note: Aberdeen MBA students frequently pivot into the energy transition space through the school’s ties with the North Sea supermajors. Say that in the essay if it matches your plan. Do not repeat generic MBA framing.

Aberdeen PhD Application Route

Aberdeen runs PhD admissions on a rolling basis, so there is no single deadline for the year. Applications go through the Direct Applicant portal and require a supervisor match before you file. Most PhD offers are conditional on English proof and a research proposal accepted by the intended supervisor.

University of Aberdeen PhD Supervisor-First Step

Contact a potential supervisor with a 2 to 3 page research proposal and CV before you file. Aberdeen will not consider a full PhD application without evidence the department can host the topic. Supervisor lists sit under each school’s Research page on abdn.ac.uk.

University of Aberdeen PhD Funding for Indian Students

Full stipend routes for Indian applicants include UKRI-linked studentships (through CDT calls in energy and health), school-level fee waivers, and the Chevening pathway for a top-up masters year. Aberdeen also runs its Aberdeen Global scholarship at £8,000 (₹10.33 Lakhs) a year for high-scoring PG applicants that PhD candidates can hold for the first-year fee. For a fuller list, see the funding for Indian students page.

University of Aberdeen Application Process on UCAS and PGAP

Aberdeen splits application intake by level. Undergraduate courses go through UCAS, which opened submissions for the 2027 cycle on 1 September 2026. Postgraduate courses go through Aberdeen’s Direct Applicant portal at abdn.ac.uk/apply for start dates from January 2027 onward. The full route for Indian applicants:

  1. Undergraduate: Register on UCAS (the 2027 cycle opened 12 May 2026, submissions from 1 September 2026), select Aberdeen as one of up to five choices, and pay the UCAS application fee of £34.50 (₹4,455) covering all choices.
  2. Postgraduate: Create a Direct Applicant portal account, pick your programme, and submit. There is no application fee for direct PG submissions.
  3. Upload transcripts, degree certificate (or provisional letter), CV, statement of intent, and two academic references.
  4. Upload the IELTS or PTE result, or the MOI letter or Class XII English 80% mark if you qualify for a waiver.
  5. Wait 4 to 8 weeks for a decision. Aberdeen turns most PG offers within 6 weeks in the September rush, faster off-peak.
  6. On offer, accept, and pay the £5,000 (₹6.46 Lakhs) tuition deposit within 4 weeks to release the CAS.
  7. Use the CAS to file the Student Route visa application at least 3 months before travel.

Insider note: The £5,000 deposit is the CAS trigger and is non-refundable outside of visa refusal. Do not accept an Aberdeen offer until your finances are ready to move within the 4-week window, or you will lose the offer.

Aberdeen Documents Required for Indian Applicants

Aberdeen’s document checklist stays consistent across taught PG and UG applications. Paperwork sits separately from the academic thresholds already covered in Eligibility. Line up scanned copies in PDF at 300 dpi before you begin the portal form.

  • Valid passport bio page with at least 18 months of remaining validity.
  • Class X and Class XII mark sheets, plus passing certificates.
  • Bachelor’s transcripts for every semester, or consolidated mark sheet.
  • Bachelor’s degree certificate or provisional degree letter.
  • Statement of purpose or personal statement (400 to 800 words).
  • Two academic references on official letterhead, or one academic and one professional for MBA applicants.
  • Updated CV with dated employment history for PG and MBA applicants.
  • IELTS, PTE, TOEFL, or Duolingo score report, or MOI letter, or Class XII English at 80%+ transcript.
  • Work experience letters for MBA applicants, signed by HR on company letterhead.
  • Research proposal for PhD applicants, 2 to 3 pages, aligned with a named supervisor.
  • Financial proof (later): 28 days of ₹ balance or a loan sanction letter for the visa file, not the university file.

University of Aberdeen Acceptance Rate for Indian Students

Aberdeen’s institution-wide acceptance rate is around 78%, which sits well above the Russell Group average and reflects Aberdeen’s practice of admitting qualified applicants against a stated threshold rather than a fixed cohort cap. That headline number should be read alongside programme-level selectivity and the university’s ranking band in the QS World rankings.

University of Aberdeen Course-Level Selectivity

Not every course clears at 78%. MBChB Medicine, MSc Data Science, the MBA, and MSc Petroleum Engineering typically run tighter, with sub-50% cohort acceptance in a heavy year for Indian applications. Arts, Divinity, and Education programmes sit closer to the institutional floor.

University of Aberdeen Indian Student Success Pattern

Indian applicants who meet the stated thresholds and file early in the cycle convert at rates comparable to the institutional average. Late applications competing for the last CAS slots see visibly lower success. File September to November for the following September for the strongest odds.

Reality check: A 78% institutional rate is a threshold-admission signal, not a promise for competitive masters. If you are targeting Data Science, Finance, MBA, or Medicine, build your file to a competitive standard rather than the floor.

UK Student Visa for University of Aberdeen Applicants

Indian applicants heading to Aberdeen for a course longer than 6 months apply under the UK Student Route (Student Visa), replacing the older Tier 4. Once Aberdeen releases your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) after you pay the £5,000 (₹6.46 Lakhs) tuition deposit, you have up to 6 months to enter the UK before your course start date. The application is filed online at gov.uk with a VFS Global biometric appointment in India.

The core visa file needs the CAS, the Aberdeen offer letter, Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) clearance for select engineering and science courses, passport, IELTS or MOI proof, and 28 days of maintenance funds. Maintenance for a course outside London (Aberdeen counts as outside) sits at £1,023 (₹1.32 Lakhs) per month for up to 9 months, bringing the maintenance floor to about £9,207 (₹11.89 Lakhs) plus first-year tuition minus any deposit paid. The Immigration Health Surcharge is £776 (₹1.00 Lakh) per year of leave, paid upfront.

2026 update: The UK Graduate Route continues to offer 2 years of post-study work (3 for PhD graduates) for Indian students finishing at Aberdeen, and it does not need employer sponsorship at application. Post-study work rights should be checked against the latest gov.uk guidance, since they have been under review.

Aberdeen Application Tips and Checklist

The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns seen at Aberdeen across recent September and January intakes. They sit alongside the academic and English rules covered above and focus on timing, sequencing, and the small decisions that push a borderline file over the line.

  • Apply September to November for the following September to secure a CAS slot before the visa queue tightens.
  • Use the MOI waiver if you studied Bachelor’s in English medium at an approved Indian university, and skip the IELTS unless a scholarship demands it.
  • Frame the Statement of Purpose to Aberdeen’s real strengths: petroleum and energy transition, health data, divinity and law. Avoid generic UK-study language.
  • Line up the ₹6.46 Lakh deposit in a liquid account before you accept, so you can trigger the CAS inside the 4-week window.
  • Request transcripts 8 weeks before your intended deadline. Indian universities miss the courier window more often than students expect.
  • Book your visa biometrics as soon as the CAS drops. Aberdeen’s September start sits in the peak VFS queue.
  • Confirm ATAS clearance early for petroleum, renewable energy, and chemistry engineering PG routes. ATAS can add 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Keep two academic referees warm so the reference request does not become the bottleneck.
  • Do not defer twice. Aberdeen accepts one deferral cleanly, but a second usually needs a fresh application.

Aberdeen admissions reward organised, early files with a defensible academic story and clean finances. Meet the Class XII or Bachelor’s floor, clear English via test or MOI, and pay the deposit fast to lock in a CAS. Do that, and 78% acceptance becomes your actual probability at Aberdeen.
