University of Sussex Application Deadlines for Indian Students
Sussex runs a large September primary intake and a small January intake limited to two programmes. Undergraduate applications go through UCAS (the UK’s central undergraduate admissions service), and Masters and PhD applications go through Sussex’s own portals. Dates below are drawn from the Sussex Masters application page and UCAS 2027 key dates. Sussex’s primary intake for Indian students is September — most Masters, all undergraduate courses and most PhDs open here.
| Intake | Level | App Opens | Deadline | App Fee | Portal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| September 2027 (Primary intake) | Undergraduate | 1 September 2026 | 13 January 2027, 18:00 UK time | £28.95 (INR 3,743) | UCAS |
| January 2027 | Sussex MBA | Open | 30 November 2026 | No fee | Sussex Masters portal |
| January 2027 | MSc Data Science | Open | 15 December 2026 | No fee | Sussex Masters portal |
| September 2027 (Primary intake) | Masters (most programmes) | Late November 2026 | Two months before course start (typically early August 2027) | No fee | Sussex Masters portal |
| September 2027 | PhD (Commonwealth Scholarships) | Open | 20 October 2026, 16:00 UK time | No fee | Sussex PhD portal |
| September 2027 | PhD (general research) | Open | 1 January 2027, 23:45 UK time | No fee | Sussex PhD portal |
Popular courses such as the MBA and MSc Data Science regularly fill their January cap well before the stated close date. High-demand September courses can also close months before the standard August deadline, so early submission remains the safer route.
Planning note: Sussex uses one central 18:00 UK time cutoff on the January UCAS deadline. Any UCAS form submitted after that moves to the late-application pool and loses equal-consideration status, so plan the submission at least a working day earlier from India.
University of Sussex Eligibility for Indian Students
Sussex publishes India-specific entry thresholds on its India country page, splitting academic requirements by level and translating UK degree classes into Indian percentages. English scores follow a three-tier framework (Standard, High, Advanced) that varies by programme.
- UG general entry: Class XII pass at 65 percent overall from CBSE, CISCE or accepted state boards
- UG competitive entry: Class XII at 80 to 85 percent for Psychology, Computer Science and similar high-demand courses
- PG standard entry: Bachelor’s with 55 to 60 percent (a UK 2:2) for most Masters
- PG competitive entry: Bachelor’s with 60 to 65 percent (a UK 2:1) for MSc Data Science, MBA and Business School courses
- PhD entry: Bachelor’s at 55 to 70 percent in a subject relevant to the doctoral topic
English-language scores accepted are IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Duolingo English Test. Typical minimums are IELTS 6.0 (Standard), IELTS 6.5 (High) and IELTS 7.0 (Advanced), each with per-component floors. PTE Academic Online is not accepted.
| Test | Standard | High | Advanced |
|---|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 6.0 overall, 5.5 each band | 6.5 overall, 6.0 each band | 7.0 overall, 6.5 each band |
| TOEFL iBT (pre-Jan 2026) | 80 overall | 88 overall | 95 overall |
| PTE Academic | 59 overall, 59 each | 62 overall, 59 each | 67 overall, 62 each |
| Duolingo English Test | 110 overall, 105 each | 120 overall, 110 each | 130 overall, 120 each |
University of Sussex IELTS Waiver for Indian Students
Sussex publishes a formal English exemption for Indian applicants — one of few UK universities to name Indian boards explicitly. The waiver applies to both undergraduate and postgraduate entry when the Class XII qualification was earned within six years of course start.
- CBSE English Core: 70 percent for Standard or High, 80 percent for Advanced
- CISCE Indian School Certificate English: 70 percent or Grade 3 (Standard/High), 80 percent or Grade 2 (Advanced)
- Accepted state boards: Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Kerala, Meghalaya, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Delhi, Maharashtra, West Bengal — 70 percent (Standard/High), 80 percent (Advanced)
- General MOI: a current medium of teaching in English also counts, subject to academic checks
Insider note: Applicants from CBSE and CISCE boards frequently pay for IELTS by default and only later find they never needed it. Send your Class XII marksheet to admissions before booking a test — the waiver is worth around INR 17,000 in test fees.
Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Sussex Masters admissions page for your chosen programme before applying.
University of Sussex Postgraduate Programs and English Scores
Most Sussex Masters that Indian students pick run one year full time and sit inside two schools — the Business School (Falmer campus) and the Institute of Development Studies (IDS, on-campus). Base tuition for 2026-27 across the popular Masters starts at £22,575 for the IDS Development Studies MA (around INR 29.19 Lakhs) and rises to £28,100 for the MBA (around INR 36.33 Lakhs). For a full course-wise fees breakdown, see the Sussex programs page.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official University of Sussex English language page for your chosen programme before applying.
University of Sussex Undergraduate Programs for Indian Students
Undergraduate applications from India go through UCAS with Sussex’s institution code S90. Most three-year Bachelor’s programmes ask for Class XII at 70 to 80 percent from CBSE, CISCE or the ten accepted state boards, and lab-based subjects (Computer Science, Psychology, Life Sciences) pitch offers a band higher. Base international tuition for 2026-27 sits at £24,200 (around INR 31.29 Lakhs) for classroom subjects, rising to £28,100 (around INR 36.33 Lakhs) for laboratory-heavy courses. Foundation Year and International Year One entry routes are open for applicants short of direct-entry marks.
| Programme | Duration | Minimum Eligibility | English Req. Min. |
|---|---|---|---|
| BSc Business and Management | 3 years | Class XII 70 to 80 percent (typical offer ABB-BBB) | IELTS 6.0 |
| BSc Computer Science | 3 years | Class XII 70 to 80 percent with Maths; typical offer ABB-BBB | IELTS 6.0 |
| BA Economics | 3 years | Class XII 70 to 80 percent with Maths; typical offer ABB-BBB | IELTS 6.0 |
| LLB Law | 3 years | Class XII 70 to 80 percent; typical offer AAB-ABB | IELTS 6.0 |
| BSc Psychology | 3 years | Class XII around 85 percent from CBSE, CISCE or Maharashtra Board; typical offer AAB | IELTS 6.0 |
Indian applicants get one UCAS form for up to five UK universities and pay a single fee. Sussex accepts the CBSE and CISCE Class XII English mark of 70 percent as an IELTS waiver, so many UG applicants clear the language requirement without a separate test.
University of Sussex MBA Admissions
The Sussex MBA is a one-year full-time programme at Sussex Business School with two annual intakes — September and January. 2026-27 international tuition is £28,100 (around INR 36.33 Lakhs). GMAT and GRE are not compulsory. Base MBA admissions data is drawn from the official Sussex MBA course page.
University of Sussex MBA Work Experience Requirement
Sussex asks for at least three years of relevant full-time work experience in managerial, professional or entrepreneurial roles. Applicants below the three-year mark are typically directed to the MSc International Management (no experience minimum) or MSc Management and Entrepreneurship. The academic floor is a UK 2:2, translating to around 55 percent in an Indian Bachelor’s.
University of Sussex MBA Interview and Selection
Shortlisted MBA candidates complete an interview by video platform or in person at the Falmer campus. Sussex uses the interview to test motivation, career fit and communication rather than case-solving under time pressure. Explore the funding options for Indian students before submitting — the Chancellor’s International Scholarship and Sussex Business School awards can offset a large share of MBA fees.
- January 2027 deadline: 30 November 2026 (Sussex Masters portal)
- September 2027 deadline: two months before course start, typically early August 2027
- Fee: no MBA-specific application fee
Note: MBA fees, intake availability, and interview slots may change. Confirm on the official University of Sussex application portal before applying.
University of Sussex PhD Applications
Sussex accepts PhD applications year-round but tags admissions to specific school-level windows for funded studentships. International PhD tuition for 2026-27 sits at £23,500 (around INR 30.39 Lakhs) for non-laboratory work and £27,300 (around INR 35.30 Lakhs) for laboratory-based research. Indian applicants typically need a Bachelor’s at 55 to 70 percent in a relevant discipline, and a Master’s is expected for most humanities and social science departments.
University of Sussex PhD Funding for Indian Students
Two dated funding rounds for September 2027 entry are already open. The Commonwealth PhD Scholarships (for candidates from OECD-listed least developed and fragile states) close on 20 October 2026 at 16:00 UK time and cover full tuition, a stipend, return travel and a research training grant. The main Sussex research studentships close on 1 January 2027 at 23:45 UK time. India-eligible awards are listed alongside faculty-level scholarships.
University of Sussex PhD Application Steps
Applicants approach a prospective supervisor first with a two-page research proposal, then submit through the Sussex PhD portal with references, transcripts and English proof. Interviews are held by video, and a supervisor’s endorsement is expected before an offer.
Planning note: The Commonwealth PhD Scholarship deadline (20 October 2026) is roughly two months earlier than the main studentship deadline. Missing it means routing to self-funded or School-level awards only.
Note: Doctoral funding, stipend levels, and application windows vary by School. Confirm on the official Sussex PhD funding page for your chosen programme before applying.
University of Sussex Application Process
Two application routes cover almost every Indian applicant — UCAS for undergraduate entry and the Sussex Masters portal for taught postgraduate courses. PhD candidates use a third dedicated PhD portal. The steps below are the standard Sussex sequence for postgraduate applicants.
- Register on the Sussex Masters application portal at sussex.ac.uk/pgapplication and select course, entry term and mode.
- Complete personal, academic and English sections — Sussex asks about visa status upfront, so Indian applicants tick "yes" for visa needed.
- Upload transcripts, degree certificate, personal statement, CV and references before submission; there is no application fee for Masters courses.
- Wait for a decision, typically four to six weeks after a complete submission, longer for MBA (interview required).
- Accept the offer in the portal and pay the tuition deposit if the offer is conditional on visa.
- Receive the CAS letter (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies — the UK Home Office’s electronic sponsor reference) from Sussex, then apply for the UK Student visa.
Undergraduate applicants build the UCAS form once, list up to five UK universities, submit a single personal statement and pay the UCAS application fee of £28.95 (around INR 3,743) covering all five choices.
After submission, offer letters typically arrive within six to eight weeks. Sussex issues conditional and unconditional offers. A conditional offer usually asks for the final Class XII or Bachelor’s mark, an English score if the waiver did not apply, and, for MBA, a signed reference verifying work experience. Accepting an offer locks a place — Sussex asks for a reply by around 45 days, and deferrals to the next intake are considered case by case.
University of Sussex Documents Required
Documents vary marginally by level, but the packet below covers most Sussex applications from Indian students. All uploads happen inside the online portal; hard copies are not required at application stage.
- Valid Indian passport: biodata page, minimum 24 months’ validity from course start
- Class X and Class XII marksheets and pass certificates (for UG applicants and for the English-waiver check)
- Bachelor’s degree transcripts and provisional or final degree certificate (for PG and PhD applicants)
- Master’s transcripts if applying for PhD
- Personal statement (500 to 1,000 words for Masters, 4,000 characters for UCAS)
- Two academic references, or one academic and one professional for MBA and mid-career applicants
- Updated CV with dated work experience, especially for MBA applicants
- English test score report (IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE or DET), unless the CBSE, CISCE or state-board waiver applies
- PhD research proposal of two pages, with supervisor’s name where identified
- Financial evidence for the CAS stage — bank statements covering tuition plus maintenance
The portal saves progress, so applicants can revisit uploads over multiple sessions. Sussex accepts scanned copies (PDF or JPEG) rather than certified originals at application stage.
University of Sussex Acceptance Rate for Indian Students
Sussex does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate. Independent estimates put the overall offer rate at 60 to 65 percent, placing Sussex among the moderately selective UK research universities. The number reflects offers issued across taught programmes and is not the same as the yield (offers converted into enrolments).
Why University of Sussex Acceptance Rate Varies by Programme
Offer rates run well above 70 percent for MA and MSc courses with generous class caps (International Development, Media Practice, Education) and drop closer to 40 to 50 percent for capped programmes such as MSc Data Science, MSc Finance and the MBA. Business School courses see the highest India applicant volume and the tightest gates.
How to Improve Odds at University of Sussex
The single strongest lever is timing — submit inside the first six weeks of the cycle opening, well before the cap conversation begins. Sussex’s ranking band (QS 273, THE 201-250, joint UK 27 in THE 2026) means peer competitiveness rewards a specific, programme-fit personal statement over a generic one.
Insider note: Sussex reviewers look for a clear line between a candidate’s Bachelor’s coursework and the Masters modules they will take. Vague "I want to expand my horizons" statements sit below Indian applicants who name two or three Sussex modules and connect them to a career step.
UK Student Visa Process for University of Sussex
Indian students admitted to Sussex apply for the UK Student visa (formerly Tier 4 General), the standard route for courses six months or longer. The visa is granted by the UK Home Office after Sussex issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS — the electronic sponsor reference) on offer acceptance. Applications are filed online through the UK gov.uk student visa portal, followed by a biometrics appointment at a VFS Global centre in India.
Financial proof for the 2026 cycle asks for tuition for the first year plus £1,483 per month for up to nine months (around INR 1.92 Lakhs monthly) to cover living costs outside London. Funds must sit in an Indian bank account for at least 28 consecutive days ending within 31 days of the application date. Sussex Brighton is outside Greater London, so applicants use the lower monthly maintenance figure. The visa fee is £524 (around INR 67,753), and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS — the NHS access charge) runs at £776 per year (around INR 1.00 Lakh) of the course length.
Processing typically takes three weeks from biometrics submission. On arrival, students collect the Biometric Residence Permit (BRP — the physical ID card confirming the visa) from a Post Office branch near the Falmer campus within ten days.
2026 update: The Graduate Route (post-study work visa) still gives Sussex Masters graduates two years of unsponsored UK work rights after course completion, unchanged for the 2026-27 cycle.
Tips and Checklist for University of Sussex Admissions
The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Sussex over recent intakes, focused on where offers gain or lose time.
- Request Class XII English marksheet early: the IELTS waiver at 70 percent CBSE, CISCE or state-board English saves both fees and weeks
- Draft a course-specific personal statement: reviewers weight programme-fit language above general ambition claims
- Line up two academic referees at least 8 weeks before the deadline; late references stall Sussex decisions
- Apply within six weeks of the intake opening for capped Business School and Data Science courses
- Book biometrics as soon as CAS arrives: the VFS window in Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru fills fast in June and July
- Confirm the English waiver in writing with pg.enquiries@sussex.ac.uk before deciding to skip an IELTS booking
- Keep funds parked in one Indian bank account for 28 straight days before the visa filing date
- Nominate a supervisor for PhD applications before uploading the research proposal — unsolicited proposals rarely move forward
Sussex’s student reviews page gives more first-hand read on how Indian students have handled the visa and CAS timelines.
Sussex sits inside the QS top 275 and THE 201-250 band and admits Indian applicants with Class XII around 65 percent or Bachelor’s at 55 to 65 percent. The January 2027 window remains actionable for MBA and MSc Data Science, while the September 2027 UCAS cycle offers the primary UG runway.

- Faculty : Student ratio is healthy
- For masters students, there are minimal number of classes which gives them the opportunity to do/learn many other things
- For PhD students, there is a high level of independence to do their own research or work around their own course structure
Dislikes
- For PG Taught courses, Limited contact hours is both a blessing and a curse. For students who are not used to self-learning (which is most Indian students), it's a huge curse as most of the learning is expected to be through your own research
- For PhD-level courses, the independence comes at a heavy cost which takes a while for students to realize that ownership of their course
- There are far fewer "induction" programs that will help students (particularly international students) get fully integrated into the university. This is less of an administration problem as they keep trying more of a cultural problem on a campus with such diverse set of students. It's almost impossible to feel organised.
Scholarship
- Yes, I received School Funding (which would not be available for Taught Masters courses)
- Eligibility criteria is a bachelor's degree (but a master's is expected to get a realistic opportunity) unless you have lots of relevant research experience. IELTS – 6 or 6.5. Relevant experience in terms of academic projects or papers or internships. Ability to clear technical interviews.
- Most PhD students will be funded by either the school or some other funding agency. I haven't come across many self-funded students.
- For master's students, there are a good number of scholarships available but they cover about 20-30% of the tuition fee only. Around 2-3% of the students get Chevening scholarships, which cover 100% of fees and offer a handsome stipend.

Dislikes
- The marking team Striking at the result time lead to the delaying of results, which caused a bit of anxiety among students. This could have been handled a bit better in terms of the communication that occurred.
Overview
The campus had this lively vibe, and I loved the mix of people from different backgrounds. The interdisciplinary approach to learning was refreshing—it made me see connections between subjects I never thought of before. The campus itself is gorgeous, surrounded by greenery. It's the kind of place where you can find a peaceful spot to study or just chill. The focus on research was impressive, and I got to explore topics that truly fascinated me. Of course, like any journey, there were challenges, but the overall experience was definitely worth it. Sussex has this unique blend of academic excellence and a laid-back atmosphere that makes it memorable.
Scholarship
I got 2 scholarships, which was given by the university itself. I received the Sussex India Scholarship (SIS) for £3,000. I also received a scholarship from the business school- Business School International Masters Award from the University of Sussex. This is worth £3,000.

Overview
Because I liked that it was in Brighton and the course was extremely interesting to me. I get to learn contemporary issues that relate to my interests as well as gain skills that employers are keen for students to have. I also heard really good things about it and upon visiting really like the atmosphere of the campus.
Scholarship
Yes - my first-year accommodation rent was reduced by 40% and each year I've been awarded a bureau of 1000, paid in instalments each term. I was automatically enrolled in this and so all I had to do was supply my bank details.
Overview
I liked it's close proximity to my home town and have always enjoyed going to Brighton. The university has a good reputation and good job prospects also and seemed like the ideal fit for me at the time.
