Birkbeck, University of London is a public research university in Bloomsbury, central London, ranked #354 in the QS World University Rankings 2027. Founded in 1823, Birkbeck is the only UK research university built around evening teaching, making it the natural fit for Indian students who want a London degree alongside part-time work or research assistantships.

The university offers 170+ programmes across business, law, computing, arts, and sciences, all English-medium, with two admission cycles a year for Indian applicants: a full October intake and a smaller January intake for selected postgraduate courses. Around 1,000+ international students from over 100 countries currently study here, and its central Bloomsbury campus sits inside the University of London federation next to UCL, SOAS, and the British Library. Indian students commonly choose Birkbeck for the MBA, MSc Data Science, MSc Marketing, and LLM streams, which map to targeted MS universities in UK pathways.

  • QS World Ranking 2027: #354
  • Acceptance Rate: 76% (estimated)
  • Intakes: October (primary), January (selected PG programmes)
  • PG Tuition Range: GBP 18,030 to GBP 24,390 per year (INR 23.1 to 31.2 lakh)
  • Average Starting Salary for MS Graduates: GBP 32,000 to GBP 38,000 per year (INR 41.0 to 48.6 lakh, market median for London PG graduates)

Birkbeck charges the University of London overseas fee schedule, but Indian applicants have two direct fee-reduction routes: the automatic Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship for India-domiciled students, and the Global Futures Scholarship that discounts first-year fees to the UK Home rate. Post-study, graduates qualify for the UK Graduate Route visa for two years (three for PhDs) to seek employment.

Exchange rate used: 1 GBP = INR 128 as of August 2026

Admission Status: Closing Soon (October 2026 intake). Applications for the October 2026 intake close six weeks before term start for international applicants; the final CAS deadline is 14 December 2026 for late arrivals. The next cycle, for January 2027 entry (selected postgraduate programmes including MSc Bioinformatics), is expected to close in late November 2026 on a rolling basis with no fixed cut-off. Indian applicants planning September 2027 entry should target October 2026 for opening of that cycle, with rolling review through summer 2027.

Birkbeck, University of London Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Indian applicants meet Birkbeck admission requirements through officially published academic bands and one accepted English proficiency test.

  • PG academic: Bachelor’s degree with 60% or CGPA 6.5/10 for UK 2:1-level courses; 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 for UK 2:2-level courses (officially published India equivalency).
  • UG academic: Class 12 with 65% (CBSE/ISC/Maharashtra) or 70% (other state boards) for standard entry; 75%-80% for LLB Law and selective programmes.
  • English test (verbatim from official page): IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each component; TOEFL iBT 4.5 total on 1-6 band scale (reading 4, listening 4, speaking 4, writing 4.5) or 79 on legacy 0-120 scale (reading 18, listening 19, speaking 19, writing 23) for tests taken before 21 January 2026; PTE Academic 62 overall with 60 minimum per component; Cambridge CAE/CPE 176 overall, 169 per component. Duolingo English Test is not accepted at Birkbeck.
  • Standout requirement: Applicants below the language band may join Birkbeck’s 8-week Pre-Sessional English programme in July-August; no separate offer required if the conditional offer names this route.

Key insight: The Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship applies automatically at enrolment for India-domiciled applicants, so no separate scholarship application is required before submitting the admission form.

Birkbeck, University of London Acceptance Rate 2027

Birkbeck does not publish an official acceptance rate. Third-party derived analysis places the figure at roughly 76% (estimated), positioning Birkbeck as moderately selective. Indian applicants meeting the published academic and English bands are typically offered a place, often conditionally.

The evening-teaching model attracts a mature and part-time cohort, which widens intake compared with peer research universities in Bloomsbury such as UCL and SOAS. Selectivity is higher for MSc Data Science, MSc Advanced Computing, and the MBA, where cohort sizes are capped.

Reality check: A 76% rate does not mean the offer is guaranteed. Indian applicants applying with a low-2:2 equivalent (below 55%) or without meeting the IELTS 6.0-per-band floor face outright rejection, not conditional offers.

Birkbeck, University of London Campus, Facilities and Student Life

Birkbeck’s single campus sits in Bloomsbury on Torrington Square, inside the University of London federation, within walking distance of the British Library and Russell Square Tube station.

  • Location: Central Bloomsbury, London WC1; Russell Square (Piccadilly line) and Euston (Northern/Victoria lines) both under 5 minutes walk.
  • Housing: Birkbeck does not run large-scale halls; students access University of London intercollegiate housing with rates from GBP 216 to GBP 690 per week; guarantee is not assured, so early booking is essential.
  • Library and study spaces: Full 24-hour access to the Birkbeck Library plus reciprocal borrowing at Senate House Library, the largest academic humanities library in the UK.
  • Evening timetable: Core teaching runs 6 pm to 9 pm, freeing daytime for internships, part-time work up to 20 hours per week on a student visa, or research.
  • Indian community: Active Birkbeck India Society organises Diwali and Holi events; South Asian societies at nearby SOAS and UCL are open to Birkbeck students under the Bloomsbury Consortium.

What Indian students say: Evening-only lectures let students take paid internships during the day, which offset central London rent. The trade-off is a longer, socially quieter week than at typical residential UK universities.

Key insight: Birkbeck’s QS 2027 position of #354 comfortably clears the UK Graduate Route visa threshold (only unranked institutions are excluded), and its Russell Group-adjacent Bloomsbury location keeps it visible to UK graduate recruiters.

Birkbeck, University of London Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

Birkbeck does not publish a central placement rate; graduate outcomes are tracked via the UK Graduate Outcomes survey and inform the salary and employer signals below.

  • Median PG starting salary: GBP 32,000 to GBP 38,000 (INR 41.0 to 48.6 lakh, market median for London PG graduates)
  • MBA median post-degree salary: GBP 55,000 to GBP 65,000 (INR 70.4 to 83.2 lakh, market median for London one-year MBAs)
  • Representative sectors: Financial services, professional services, media and journalism, public sector, university research
  • Post-study work visa: UK Graduate Route allows 2 years post-completion for master’s graduates, 3 years for PhDs
  • Careers support: Birkbeck Futures runs targeted evening workshops, one-to-one CV reviews, and a dedicated international-student careers adviser for right-to-work guidance

Insider note: Because Birkbeck sits in central London, MSc Data Science and MSc Marketing graduates report faster time-to-first-interview than at many campus-only UK universities; evening teaching also allows internships to convert into full-time offers before graduation.

Birkbeck, University of London vs Peer Universities

The peer set below covers London-based and comparable UK universities Indian applicants weigh against Birkbeck, University of London, on QS rank, fee and structural fit.

UniversityQS Rank 2027Avg Annual PG Fee (GBP)Avg Annual PG Fee (INR lakh)Differentiator
Birkbeck, University of London#35421,00026.9 lakhOnly UK research university built around evening teaching
SOAS, University of London#485 (estimated)24,00030.7 lakhGlobal specialisation in Asian and African studies
City, University of London#34025,00032.0 lakhStrong Bayes Business School and law programmes
Queen Mary University of London#12828,00035.8 lakhRussell Group; higher research intensity
Brunel University London#375 (estimated)22,00028.2 lakhWest London campus with strong engineering focus

Birkbeck stands out for two data-backed reasons: its PG fee floor of GBP 18,030 for MSc Data Science is among the lowest in central London, and its evening timetable is the only one in the UK research university sector that formally supports full-day paid work alongside a masters.

For applicants who prioritise flexibility, lower fees, and central London geography over Russell Group branding, Birkbeck, University of London offers a value profile few UK peers can match. Total 2027 investment lands near GBP 40,000 (INR 51 lakh) against a market median PG salary of GBP 35,000 (INR 44.8 lakh), so investment recovers within 18 to 24 months for graduates who convert into a London role via the UK Graduate Route. It is not the right fit for applicants targeting research-intensive PhD tracks or a Russell Group brand on the CV; Queen Mary University of London or King’s College London are the honest alternatives for that profile.

Birkbeck, University of London FAQs

Ques. What English-medium programmes does Birkbeck offer beyond the top 10?

Ans. Birkbeck teaches all 170+ programmes in English, including MSc Bioinformatics, MSc Environment and Sustainability, MSc Business Innovation with Data Analytics, MA Film Studies and MRes Chemistry. Selected postgraduate courses also open a January intake alongside the main October cycle, giving Indian applicants a second yearly entry window. Distance-learning routes are available through the University of London federation for a small subset of programmes.

Ques. How many hours can Indian students work part-time at Birkbeck?

Ans. Indian students on a UK Student Visa can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during vacations. Because Birkbeck teaches classes from 6 pm to 9 pm on weekday evenings, students have the full working day free for paid internships or roles. Placement into UK internships is often faster than at daytime-teaching universities because interview windows align with employer schedules.

Ques. Can Indian applicants get a GRE or GMAT waiver at Birkbeck?

Ans. Birkbeck does not require the GRE or GMAT for any postgraduate taught programme, including the MBA and MSc Data Science. Admission decisions rely on the bachelor’s percentage, English test score and personal statement, with work experience considered for the MBA. This is a meaningful cost saving of INR 20,000 to 25,000 for Indian applicants who would otherwise sit these tests.

Ques. What is the Birkbeck application fee for Indian students?

Ans. Birkbeck charges no application fee for MA, MSc, LLM or MRes postgraduate programmes, making the application financially risk-free for Indian applicants. Undergraduate applications go through UCAS, which charges its own application fee of GBP 28.50 for a single-choice application in the 2026-27 cycle. The saving on PG applications is one of the reasons Indian students often add Birkbeck to their shortlist.

Ques. Which Indian education loan lenders recognise Birkbeck for funding?

Ans. Birkbeck is on the approved-university lists for HDFC Credila, Avanse, Auxilo, State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, ICICI Bank and Prodigy Finance. Loans typically cover full tuition plus living costs up to INR 75 lakh with a UK-based collateral-free option through Prodigy. Indian applicants should share the unconditional offer letter and Birkbeck’s official cost sheet to accelerate loan sanction, which averages three weeks.

Ques. Does Birkbeck ask Indian applicants to sit an interview?

Ans. Most Birkbeck postgraduate programmes decide on the written application alone, with no interview required for Indian applicants. Interviews are usually reserved for the MBA and MRes/PhD research pathways, where the department needs to assess research fit or work experience. Where required, interviews are held online via Microsoft Teams and typically last 30 to 45 minutes.

Ques. How does Birkbeck verify Indian transcripts and degree certificates?

Ans. Birkbeck accepts Indian degree certificates and mark sheets directly from CBSE, ISC and state boards and from UGC-recognised universities without mandatory WES evaluation. Apostille from the Ministry of External Affairs is not required at the application stage. Applicants must bring original transcripts to enrolment for verification, and Birkbeck contacts the issuing university directly for confirmation in cases of doubt.

Ques. Can dependants join an Indian student at Birkbeck under UK visa rules?

Ans. Under the January 2024 UK immigration rules, only Indian students on a PhD or other research programme of at least nine months can bring dependants on a UK Student Dependant visa. Master’s students on taught programmes at Birkbeck cannot bring a spouse or child under this route. Financial proof for a PhD dependant is GBP 845 per month per dependant in London, on top of the student’s own maintenance requirement.

Fees

  • I am not in an hostel so I am not aware of that. The total fee was 19780 pounds, which can be paid either semester-wise or multiple semesters together. You can transfer the fee amount through a valid VISA card by direct card transfer or bank transfer if that's fine too. Flywire is also accepted, I think. Initially my expenses were a bit high because i didn't know how to budget but now it averages out to 1000 to 1100 pounds a month (800 for rent and bills, the rest on food and travel)
