The Birkbeck University of London has two campuses in London. The main campus is located at Bloomsbury, central London. The university has a branch campus at Stratford, east London. Both campuses are easily accessible by public transport. The university offers a live student community with inter-collegiate collaborations via the Student Central. The Student Central offers excellent and affordable amenities to all students including sports facilities, societies, music venues, bars and cafes. 

Birkbeck University has excellent infrastructure for teaching spaces and laboratories. The university library stocks a vast collection of resources spread across five floors of the main Birkbeck building in Bloomsbury. Moodle is an innovative online learning environment offered at the university. It can be used for accessing course materials and learning resources and chats with the lecturer and students about study topics.

Application deadline:  

  • Applications for MPhil/Ph.D. are considered throughout the year. Applicants who would like to receive a research studentship or other research funding may apply by January of the year of entry.
  • Exceptional deadlines for specific courses.

    • Grad Diploma in Economics: 14 August
    • BSc Economics, BSc Finance with Accounting or BSc Financial Economics: 12 August
    • BBA Culinary Industry Management: 29 August
    • BSc Mathematics: 2 September

Admission Requirements:

  • One reference for undergraduate study and two references for postgraduate study.

  • Commonwealth Scholarships
    • Citizens from Commonwealth nations can apply for a number of different funds under the Commonwealth Scholarship.
  • Chevening Scholarships
    • These are full cost-covering scholarships (including tuition, living, and accommodation).

Work While You Study 

Most of the teaching at Birkbeck University takes place in the evening and students can work part-time during the day. All Birkbeck students can access the online careers and employability support service using their student login and avail a rich variety of content including interview simulator exercises and tests, work skills and e-learning, industry reports and free webinars. The Birkbeck Talent is a professional recruitment service offered to students and alumni of the university to link them to the top employers in the UK.

However, there are some restrictions to getting employed as follows.

  • Students in the UK as a student visitor or visitor visa are not permitted to work.
  • Students cannot undertake permanent full time jobs.
  • Students cannot be employed in any of the below categories.
    • Self-employed or undertaking a business activity.
    • Professional sportsperson or sports coach.
    • Entertainer.
    • Doctor or dentist in training.
  • The 4 Visa restrictions:
    • Undergraduate students can work part-time for a maximum of 20 hours per week during term time.
    • Students in the English pre-sessional course can work part-time for a maximum of 10 hours per week during term time.
    • Postgraduate or doctoral students can work for a maximum of 20 hours per week.
