University of Westminster, founded as the Royal Polytechnic Institution in 1838 is the very first polytechnic in the United Kingdom. This London-based public research university offered admission to over 19,000 students in its undergraduate, graduate, research, and short courses. With students from over 169 nations, it is also known to be among the top 15 international universities in the world and one of the best UK universities for international students.

Admissions at University of Westminster are processed via the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) website. All students must put forth their applications through the same and follow through with all the steps to secure a seat at this institution. Intake at the organization begins in September for the usual semester-based courses. The summer program admissions begin in June/July.

The acceptance rate at the university is quite low, the latest being 17.24% (published by UCAS on January 30, 2020). This is but the general acceptance rate, whereas, some courses have an even lower rate of acceptance. For example, fashion courses accept less than 10% of the total applications at this university. This makes it both a challenge and an act of great prestige to be selected at the University of Westminster.

Some salient points regarding admissions at the institute are as mentioned below:

  • The University of Westminster invites applications for admissions from September 1.
  • Both the undergraduate and graduate applicants have to apply through UCAS.
  • The university accepts both TOEFL and IELTS scores as proof of English proficiency.
  • International applicants must complete their visa process in time.
  • Applicants must keep track of their application status through UCAS track.

COVID-19 Admission Updates

Due to the worldwide effect of COVID-19, the university has closed itself to the general public. It has shifted to online classes and assessments until it is safe for the students to return to the campus. All student residences are open and being carefully catered to in order to avoid any coronavirus outbreak. Admissions are open for all; however, new students starting in September will have to stick to online assessments until further notice.

Visa Process for International Students

University of Westminster permits students to take admission via different forms of visa based on the type of course. If you are seeking admission in a regular degree course, you will need a tier 4 general student visa to study in the UK. However, if your course is a short one (less than 6 months), a Short-Term Study Visa will suffice.

For getting a Tier 4 visa, a student needs to go through an interview, carrying financial evidence for eligibility along with other supporting documents like passport, visa application, etc. Students will also be asked for their Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS) statement, which contains all your information presented by the university to the Home Office (UK). This is different from an offer letter and holds the make or break factor in your admission. All students receive their CAS within 10 days of payment of all dues.

The CAS expires after 6 months and should be used before that, otherwise a new CAS would be required. Indian students can contact the Westminster team in Delhi for all their queries, they can be reached at india@westminster.ac.uk or 011 42124112.
