University of St Andrews Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Requirements at the University of St Andrews vary sharply by subject, with STEM and Medicine set materially higher than Arts and Divinity.

Postgraduate:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 60% to 80% or CGPA 7.0 to 9.0/10, depending on the institution attended (per the official India entry page).
  • IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, with 6.0 Listening, 6.0 Reading, 6.5 Writing, 6.0 Speaking (School of English requires higher).
  • TOEFL iBT 81 overall, with 16 Listening, 16 Reading, 23 Writing, 19 Speaking (0-120 legacy scale as published).
  • PTE Academic 70 overall, with 64 Listening, 64 Reading, 70 Writing, 64 Speaking.

Undergraduate:

  • Class 12 with 85% for Arts and Humanities, 90% for standard STEM, 93% for Computer Science, Economics, Finance and Management, and 90% with 90% in four of five subjects (including Chemistry) for Medicine.
  • Same English test minimums as PG apply.

Key insight: St Andrews does not require GRE or GMAT for any programme, including MSc Finance and Management. Indian applicants with a strong bachelor’s transcript from an NAAC A/A+ or IIT/NIT institution generally hit the 60% band comfortably; graduates of mid-tier universities may need to sit closer to 70% to be competitive.

University of St Andrews Acceptance Rate 2027

The University of St Andrews does not publish a single overall acceptance rate; third-party analyses of UCAS admissions cycles suggest an overall rate of about 8% (estimated) for undergraduate entry, making it one of the most selective universities in the UK. Reliability is moderate — subject-level rates vary widely and international rates can be higher for less oversubscribed programmes.

Competitive subjects (Medicine, Computer Science, Economics, International Relations) sit well below this figure; less-subscribed Divinity, Classics and Modern Languages programmes are meaningfully more accessible for well-prepared Indian applicants.

Reality check: An 8% headline rate should not deter well-qualified Indian applicants. Applying early (before mid-November 2026), targeting subjects where you exceed the published Class 12 or CGPA threshold, and choosing a second-choice programme within the same School meaningfully improves the odds of an offer.

University of St Andrews Campus, Facilities and Student Life

The University of St Andrews is spread across the small coastal town of St Andrews in Fife, with academic buildings, halls and colleges woven into the town itself rather than sitting on a single fenced campus.

  • Location: 90 minutes by train and bus from Edinburgh via Leuchars station; St Andrews itself has no rail station.
  • Housing: University halls guarantee accommodation to first-year international UG students; annual rents range £6,246 to £12,976 for 2026-2027.
  • Facilities: The Wardlaw Museum, the University Library (over one million volumes) and the Sports Centre with 25 m pool serve all students.
  • Indian community: The St Andrews India Society organises Diwali, Holi and cricket socials; the Chaplaincy hosts multi-faith spaces including for Hindu and Sikh students.

What Indian students say: The town is safe and walkable end-to-end in 20 minutes. Winters are dark and the social calendar is dense but small — most Indian students describe the community as tight-knit and academically intense, with weekend trips to Edinburgh, Dundee and the Highlands.

Subject strength is concentrated in Humanities: QS Subject 2026 places St Andrews at #12 for Philosophy, #13 for Theology and Divinity, #40 for English, #45 for History, and #63 for Modern Languages. Eleven subjects sit inside the QS global top 50, and the university is #21 in the UK per THE 2026.

Key insight: St Andrews’ QS #115 placement is comfortably inside the UK Skilled Worker visa recognised universities list, which matters for Indian students planning to convert the Graduate route into long-term employment. Employers in policy, consulting and asset management specifically recognise the university’s Humanities and IR pedigree.

University of St Andrews Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

The University of St Andrews reports strong graduate outcomes concentrated in policy, consulting, financial services and academia; the university does not publish a single graduate placement percentage on its overview page.

  • Median graduate salary: UK-wide market median for St Andrews graduates sits around £28,000 to £34,000 (₹36.53 to ₹44.36 lakh) per year (market median, varies by discipline).
  • Top hiring sectors: Financial services, management consulting, public policy, technology and academia.
  • Representative employers: HSBC, PwC, Deloitte, KPMG, Barclays, the UK Foreign Office and BBC (representative of graduate destinations, not disclosed as a formal list).
  • Careers support: The Careers Centre runs one-to-one advising, employer fairs and a formal internship scheme; Handshake is the primary vacancy platform.
  • Post-study work: The UK Graduate route allows two years of post-study work for UG and PG completers, extended to three years for PhD holders.

Insider note: Indian graduates typically convert the Graduate route into Skilled Worker visas in London or Edinburgh; recruiting for junior consulting and banking roles happens 12 to 15 months before graduation, so first-year PG students should engage the Careers Centre in the September start week.

University of St Andrews vs Peer Universities

Indian applicants weigh St Andrews against other research-intensive UK universities on rank, cost and city profile. The set below covers Scottish and English peers most commonly shortlisted alongside St Andrews.

UniversityFocus StrengthPG Tuition Band (£, estimated)Best Fit For
University of St AndrewsPhilosophy, IR, Divinity, Classics£24,000 to £32,000Humanities and small-town academic setting
University of EdinburghAI, Data, Life Sciences£28,000 to £38,000 (estimated)City living plus broader STEM depth
University of GlasgowEngineering, Business, Life Sciences£25,000 to £32,000 (estimated)Value-conscious Scottish city option
Durham UniversityHumanities, Law, Business£26,000 to £32,000 (estimated)Similar collegiate feel in England
University of WarwickEconomics, Business, Maths£28,000 to £36,000 (estimated)England-based STEM and Business hub

St Andrews stands out for its Humanities and IR pedigree at global scale, small-town living costs below Edinburgh and London, and one of the tightest tutor-student ratios in the UK. It is not the strongest choice for hard engineering or for applicants who want a large-city environment.

The University of St Andrews suits Indian students with a Class 12 average of 85% or higher (93% for competitive STEM), a bachelor’s above 60% and a strong preference for Humanities, International Relations, Divinity or intimate small-town academic life. A four-year UG investment near ₹237 lakh (tuition plus living) can be justified against Skilled Worker route salaries and the two-year Graduate route pathway, with the university’s UK #21 THE 2026 position underwriting employer recognition and a smooth UK Graduate visa route.

It is not the right fit for applicants who want a bustling city environment, need heavy hands-on engineering labs, or would benefit from lower fees; the University of Glasgow or a mid-tier English Russell Group option (a self-governing group of 24 research-intensive UK universities) will usually offer better value in those cases.

University of St Andrews FAQs

Ques. Does the University of St Andrews require GRE or GMAT for Indian applicants?

Ans. No, the University of St Andrews does not require GRE or GMAT scores for any taught postgraduate programme, including MSc Finance and Management, MSc Management or MSc Data-Intensive Analysis. Admission decisions rest on the bachelor’s transcript, academic references, personal statement and English test scores. Some research-heavy MSc routes may request GRE only where the applicant’s undergraduate background is non-standard.

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time during studies at St Andrews?

Ans. Yes, Student visa holders enrolled full-time in a degree at the University of St Andrews can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during official vacations. Typical roles include library assistants, hall porters, catering, retail in the town centre and campus-facing internships through the Careers Centre. Self-employment and business-owner activity remain prohibited on the Student visa.

Ques. What waives the English test requirement at St Andrews?

Ans. Indian applicants can request a waiver if their bachelor’s degree was taught and examined entirely in English at a recognised institution, with the transcript or a formal medium-of-instruction letter as evidence. St Andrews reviews waiver requests case by case; the safer route is to sit IELTS or TOEFL early, as the Admissions team frequently declines waivers for programmes in Law, English and International Relations.

Ques. Is there an application fee for St Andrews for Indian applicants?

Ans. UCAS charges an application fee of about £28.50 for the 2027 entry cycle for a single or multiple UG choice. Postgraduate applications direct to the University of St Andrews carry no application fee for most taught Masters programmes; a small number of specialist courses may levy a fee at the time of application. Confirm the fee on the specific programme page before submitting.

Ques. Which Indian banks offer education loans for St Andrews?

Ans. The University of St Andrews is on the recognised list of most Indian public and private lenders including SBI (Global Ed-Vantage), Bank of Baroda, HDFC Credila, Avanse, Auxilo and Prodigy Finance. Unsecured loans typically cap at ₹40 lakh; larger sums require collateral such as property or a fixed deposit. A confirmed unconditional offer letter and CAS reference accelerate loan disbursal.

Ques. What financial proof is required for the UK Student visa at St Andrews?

Ans. UK Visas and Immigration requires proof of one year of tuition (as printed on the CAS) plus £1,023 per month of living costs for up to nine months (£9,207 total) outside London. Funds must sit in a personal, parent’s or nominated financial sponsor’s account for 28 consecutive days ending within 31 days of the visa application. Education loan sanction letters from listed Indian banks are accepted.

Ques. Can Indian students bring dependants on a St Andrews Student visa?

Ans. Under UK rules effective from January 2024, only PhD, other doctoral and research-based postgraduate Student visa holders at St Andrews can bring dependants; taught Masters and undergraduate students cannot. Each dependant requires additional financial proof of £680 per month for up to nine months. Dependants of eligible PhD holders can work full-time in the UK without a separate visa.

Ques. How does St Andrews verify Indian academic transcripts?

Ans. The University of St Andrews accepts official transcripts and Class 12 mark sheets issued directly by CBSE, CISCE and State Boards; bachelor’s transcripts should come from the awarding university’s controller of examinations, either physically sealed or via digital secure delivery. Attestation through the Indian MEA or WES is not mandatory for admission but is often requested for scholarship shortlisting and for the Skilled Worker visa route later.

  • We have an open campus; most universities in the UK have an open campus concept. So the departments are spread across the entire town of St Andrews.
  • We have most facilities like student advice and services,  library, sports facilities, and medical services, student union cafe, art theatre.
  • There a lot events which keep on going, here there are events for Indian festivals as well, for example diwali.
  • Here we have clubs for most sports where you can get trained and form groups. The cultural events are conducted by the student union and are held on tuesdays and fridays but most events are based on western music and pub culture.

Fees

  • When offered a position in the UK, you will always receive the expected expenses in your offer letter.
  • For example, here is how it is in St Andrews: the international fee for PhD is £26,270 per year, and the living cost, including food, is £1000-1200 per month.
  • Fees can be paid in instalments (in my case, my funding covers it).
  • My monthly expenses is as rent is £500, food £300 for food, £100 for transport and £200 for other)

  • The university is based in a small town with different buildings scattered around. There's a community hospital about a 15-minute walk from Main Street, but it does not have emergency services, ambulances are available and quick and will take you to a nearby town for emergency care.
  • There are multiple libraries in St Andrews. The main one is pretty big and makes a good place for studying, but there are also smaller ones that are beautiful.
  • The sports centre is great and offers all major sports facilities and also provides different classes such as judo, boxing or dancing, the gym is a bit small and it, being the only one, can get crowded at times.
  • Popular events include May dip when on 1st May, all students go for a dip in the North Sea when the sun rises in the morning. There are Scottish ceilidh, multiple fashion show events and a lot of formal balls, too. sports societies also extensively host events. Freshers week at the beginning of the year is also great.

Fees

  • My tuition fees for one year of study was ?27250, and I had to pay an additional ?6000 for accommodation in Dundee
  • You can pay all-together or split up your payments into a maximum of 12 installments. I did 3 installments. Rent was to be paid either monthly or all at once.
  • I was cooking by myself so I easily had around ?400 as monthly expenses.
  • As I was under 22 traveling in Scotland is free on buses so I did not have to incur traveling costs. All expenses was for eating out, cooking and other living and shopping purposes. Laundry had to be paid for too.

Overview

My time at the University of St Andrews was truly remarkable. The School of Computer Science boasted an outstanding faculty who not only excelled in their fields but also ignited our passion for learning. The diverse array of learning opportunities extended far beyond classrooms, with research projects and tech-focused clubs enriching our academic journey. Beyond academics, the town's rich history and stunning landscapes provided a captivating backdrop to our studies. St Andrews is more than a university; it's an inspiring blend of history, learning, and natural beauty that makes for an unforgettable educational experience.
