IITH B.Tech Engineering Physics FAQs

Ques. What is Engineering Physics and how is it different from regular Physics at IITH?

Ans. Engineering Physics at IIT Hyderabad is a B.Tech programme that blends the rigour of pure physics with applied engineering skills. Unlike a B.Sc Physics, the B.Tech Engineering Physics degree is recognised as an engineering qualification and opens doors to both core engineering roles and advanced physics research. The curriculum covers quantum mechanics, solid-state physics, optics, electrodynamics, and computational methods alongside engineering courses in signal processing, electronics, and materials. Students graduate with a deep theoretical foundation and practical laboratory experience.

Ques. What research facilities does the Physics department at IITH offer?

Ans. The Department of Physics at IIT Hyderabad has dedicated research labs in Condensed Matter Physics, High Energy Astrophysics, Laser Plasma Physics, Optics, and Quantum Information Science. The campus hosts a 14-inch optical telescope for astrophysical observations by undergraduate and graduate students. From 2026, a new M.Tech Photonics track is being launched in collaboration with TIFR Hyderabad and the University of Hyderabad, further strengthening the photonics and optics research ecosystem available to Engineering Physics students.

Ques. What career options are available after B.Tech Engineering Physics from IITH?

Ans. B.Tech Engineering Physics graduates from IIT Hyderabad pursue careers in multiple directions. Research-focused graduates pursue PhD programmes in condensed matter, photonics, quantum computing, or astrophysics at IITs, IISc, TIFR, and international universities. Industry-focused graduates join semiconductor companies, optical instrument manufacturers, defence research labs (DRDO, ISRO), or financial firms hiring for quantitative roles. Some transition into data science, AI, or software careers through the programme’s computational methods and programming coursework.

Ques. Is B.Tech Engineering Physics harder to get placed than CSE or EE at IITH?

Ans. B.Tech Engineering Physics graduates who seek core industry placements may face a narrower market compared to CSE or EE peers, since dedicated EP-specific hiring by mass recruiters is limited. However, EP graduates are eligible for all coding and technology roles open to any B.Tech student and are increasingly hired in quantitative finance, data science, and semiconductor research. The branch is best suited for students with a clear plan for higher studies or research, as the academic depth and flexibility of EP make it a strong foundation for postgraduate specialisation.

Ques. What is the total fee for B.Tech Engineering Physics at IIT Hyderabad?

Ans. The total fee for B.Tech Engineering Physics at IIT Hyderabad is INR 11,94,000 for the full 4-year programme. This includes tuition of INR 8,00,000 and other fees of INR 3,88,000 over 4 years, plus a refundable caution deposit of INR 6,000. The first-year payment is INR 3,13,000 including one-time joining charges. SC/ST students may receive central government tuition fee waivers, and SBI Vidyalakshmi education loans are available for all admitted students.

Which college should I choose between IIT, Hyderabad & IIIT, Hyderabad for a CSE course?

Divya SarafLives in Hyderabad

Had I been in your place, I would have chosen IIIT Hyderabad over IIT Hyderabad. While both colleges offer a good CS program, IIIT Hyderabad is the clear winner when it comes to CS. Consider the following points of comparison

  • IIT Hyderabad is a new IIt, so choosing it just because of the IIt tag would be a blunder.
  • IIT Hyderabad is still in its development phase and its campus still needs a few more facilities to become full-fledged operating.
  • IIIT Hyderabad has a better religion and brand name among the IT giants and therefore its placement scenario is way better than IIT Hyderabad.
  • IIIT Hyderabad is well-known for its achievements in competitions like ACM ICPC and GSOC.

I have my cousins in both the institutes and from their discussions I have concluded that IIIT Hyderabad leads in CS opportunities.

What do you know about an all-course M.Tech at IIT Hyderabad?

Vinisha Vasudevan
Shruti AgarwalStudied at Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IITH)

My friend has completed All-course MTech at IIT Hyderabad and claims that it has zero recognition outside IIT Hyderabad with a dearth of job opportunities. The course is a one-year program that does not require you to write a thesis/research. All you need to do is study courses in the classrooms. This is a very poor choice for those targeting a Ph.D. as this program isn’t known even at other IITs.

You will be given alien treatment and will end up wasting Lakhs on a useless degree. The majority of the IIT Hyderabad community is unaware of this course. The curriculum is poorly designed and very rigid. The world is intense, sparing you no time for extracurriculars. The majority of the first batch left the course within a few days.

The course is a complete waste of money and time so I am strongly against anyone joining it.
