IITH M.Tech Solid State Materials FAQs

Ques. What GATE papers are accepted for M.Tech Solid State Materials at IITH?

Ans. IITH accepts GATE scores from three qualifying papers for the M.Tech in Solid State Materials: CY (Chemistry), PH (Physics), and MT (Metallurgical Engineering). Candidates must appear in the paper that aligns most closely with their undergraduate discipline. Chemistry or Physics graduates typically appear in CY or PH, while engineering graduates from metallurgy or materials science use the MT paper. All three papers are considered equally for this specialization at IITH.

Ques. What research areas does M.Tech Solid State Materials at IITH cover?

Ans. The Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering at IITH carries out research in thin films, nanomaterials, semiconductor materials, energy storage materials, and crystallographic studies. The programme covers solid-state physics principles, material characterization using XRD, SEM, and TEM, and the synthesis of advanced functional materials. Students pursuing thesis in this area often work on problems related to battery technology, solar energy materials, and next-generation electronic substrates.

Ques. Can M.Sc. Physics or Chemistry graduates apply for this M.Tech programme at IITH?

Ans. Yes. The M.Tech in Solid State Materials at IITH is open to candidates with an M.Sc. background in Physics or Chemistry, in addition to engineering graduates with B.Tech or B.E. qualifications in relevant disciplines. M.Sc. graduates must hold a valid GATE score in the PH or CY paper respectively. This makes the programme one of the few M.Tech offerings at IITs that actively accommodate pure science postgraduates alongside engineering candidates.

Ques. What career opportunities exist after M.Tech Solid State Materials from IITH?

Ans. Graduates find roles in semiconductor companies, advanced materials manufacturers, battery and energy storage firms, and research institutions such as BARC, CSIR labs, and ISRO. The growing demand for materials engineers in the EV battery supply chain, display technology, and quantum device industries has expanded the career scope significantly. Many graduates also progress to doctoral programmes at IITs or international universities, leveraging the IITH brand and their research experience in materials synthesis and characterization.

Ques. Does IITH provide a monthly stipend to M.Tech Solid State Materials students?

Ans. Yes. GATE-qualified M.Tech students at IITH receive INR 12,400 per month as a Ministry of Education stipend throughout the 2-year programme. This amount is available to all GATE-admitted M.Tech students irrespective of specialization, including Solid State Materials. The stipend is subject to continued satisfactory academic performance each semester. SC/ST and PH students benefit additionally from full tuition fee exemption, making the effective cost of the programme very low for these categories.

Ques. What is the structure and duration of the M.Tech Solid State Materials programme at IITH?

Ans. The M.Tech in Solid State Materials at IITH spans 2 years divided into 4 semesters. The first year focuses on core and elective coursework covering materials science fundamentals, solid-state physics, and characterization techniques. The second year is primarily dedicated to thesis research under the supervision of EE or Materials Science faculty. The programme concludes with thesis submission and a viva voce examination. Students are encouraged to publish their research findings in peer-reviewed journals before graduating.

Which college should I choose between IIT, Hyderabad & IIIT, Hyderabad for a CSE course?

Divya SarafLives in Hyderabad

Had I been in your place, I would have chosen IIIT Hyderabad over IIT Hyderabad. While both colleges offer a good CS program, IIIT Hyderabad is the clear winner when it comes to CS. Consider the following points of comparison

  • IIT Hyderabad is a new IIt, so choosing it just because of the IIt tag would be a blunder.
  • IIT Hyderabad is still in its development phase and its campus still needs a few more facilities to become full-fledged operating.
  • IIIT Hyderabad has a better religion and brand name among the IT giants and therefore its placement scenario is way better than IIT Hyderabad.
  • IIIT Hyderabad is well-known for its achievements in competitions like ACM ICPC and GSOC.

I have my cousins in both the institutes and from their discussions I have concluded that IIIT Hyderabad leads in CS opportunities.

What do you know about an all-course M.Tech at IIT Hyderabad?

Vinisha Vasudevan
Shruti AgarwalStudied at Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IITH)

My friend has completed All-course MTech at IIT Hyderabad and claims that it has zero recognition outside IIT Hyderabad with a dearth of job opportunities. The course is a one-year program that does not require you to write a thesis/research. All you need to do is study courses in the classrooms. This is a very poor choice for those targeting a Ph.D. as this program isn’t known even at other IITs.

You will be given alien treatment and will end up wasting Lakhs on a useless degree. The majority of the IIT Hyderabad community is unaware of this course. The curriculum is poorly designed and very rigid. The world is intense, sparing you no time for extracurriculars. The majority of the first batch left the course within a few days.

The course is a complete waste of money and time so I am strongly against anyone joining it.
