IIT Hyderabad B.Tech FAQs

Ques. Is branch change possible at IITH after the first year of B.Tech?

Ans. No. IITH discontinued branch changes for B.Tech students in October 2021. All students must complete the degree in the branch they were admitted to through JoSAA. This was a deliberate decision to create focused, department-specific cohorts and improve curriculum continuity. Candidates should fill JoSAA branch preferences carefully in priority order because the allotted branch is final. If you receive a branch you strongly do not want, the only recourse is re-appearing in JEE Advanced the following year.

Ques. What makes IITH Computational Engineering different from CSE?

Ans. Computational Engineering at IITH is an interdisciplinary B.Tech focused on numerical methods, scientific computing, simulation, and high-performance computing. Unlike CSE which centers on software systems and algorithms, Computational Engineering solves large-scale problems in physics, fluid dynamics, and structural analysis using mathematical computing methods. Graduates target roles in scientific computing, defense research, aerospace simulation, and quantitative finance where mathematical computing is central.

Ques. What are the JEE Advanced closing ranks for non-CSE branches at IITH in 2025?

Ans. In JoSAA 2025 Final Round, IITH closing ranks for General category were: Artificial Intelligence at 831, Mathematics and Computing at 880, Electrical Engineering at 1,785, Computational Engineering at 1,675, Mechanical Engineering at 4,479, Chemical Engineering at 5,767, Civil Engineering at 7,908, and Biomedical Engineering at 8,503. Cutoffs vary each year based on the qualifying candidate pool and seat intake.

Ques. How does IITH B.Tech placement compare between CSE and non-CSE branches?

Ans. CSE at IITH achieves an average package of INR 43.10 LPA, significantly above the overall B.Tech average of INR 20.81 LPA. Non-CSE branches such as Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Chemical Engineering have lower averages but strong placements in core sectors and PSUs. AI graduates attract specialized data science roles. Students in Biomedical Engineering and Engineering Physics often pursue GATE-qualified PSU roles or higher studies rather than campus placements.

Ques. What fee support is available for B.Tech students from low-income families at IITH?

Ans. IITH offers tiered fee remission. Students with parental income below INR 1 lakh per year receive a full tuition fee waiver. Students with income between INR 1 lakh and INR 5 lakh receive a two-thirds tuition fee remission. SC, ST, and PwD students receive a full statutory tuition fee waiver regardless of income. The MCM scholarship additionally provides INR 1,000 per month to eligible General, OBC, and EWS students with CGPA 7.0 or above and no active backlogs.
