IITH M.Tech FAQs

Ques. What GATE score is needed for IITH M.Tech admission?

Ans. IITH does not publish a fixed GATE score cutoff. Shortlisting is department-specific and depends on the number of applicants, the GATE paper, and the specialisation applied for. CSE and Electrical Engineering tend to be more competitive, while interdisciplinary programmes like Climate Change or Heritage Science typically have lower effective cutoffs. Applying through the IITH portal and checking department-specific GATE paper requirements is the most reliable approach to assess eligibility.

Ques. Can IIT graduates join IITH M.Tech without a GATE score?

Ans. Yes. IIT graduates with a CGPA of 8.0 or above from any IIT can apply through a separate mode that does not require GATE. This mode still involves a departmental written test and an interview at IITH. Students admitted through this route receive the same stipend and tuition concession as GATE-qualified TA students.

Ques. What is the RA track and how does it differ from the TA track?

Ans. The TA track is the standard 2-year M.Tech funded by the Ministry of Education. Students assist in lab or tutorial work and receive INR 12,400 per month. The RA track is a 3-year programme tied to active research projects at IITH. RA funding comes from the project grant rather than the government. RA candidates may be admitted in up to four rounds per year rather than the two regular TA intake cycles.

Ques. Which IITH M.Tech specialisations are unique compared to other IITs?

Ans. IITH offers several specialisations that are rare or absent at other IITs: EV Technology with Computational Intelligence and Perception, Ophthalmic Engineering, Medical Device Innovation, E-Waste Resource Engineering and Management, Smart Mobility, Lightweighting Engineering, and Integrated Circuits and Microsystems Packaging. These programmes reflect IITH’s focus on applied engineering in healthcare, sustainability, and advanced manufacturing.

Ques. What is the placement rate for IITH M.Tech and who are the key recruiters?

Ans. The M.Tech placement rate at IITH was 72.52 percent in 2022-23 and 66.78 percent in 2023-24, with an average package of INR 18.10 LPA and a highest of INR 58 LPA in the latter year. The Hyderabad technology ecosystem brings in a diverse recruiter base including IT companies, pharma firms, and engineering consultancies. Students in niche specialisations often receive placement support through department-specific industry tie-ups at IITH.
