The B.Tech Lateral Entry programme in Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) at Assam Don Bosco University (ADBU), Guwahati is a full-time, on-campus programme offered under the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, School of Technology, at the Azara Campus. The department was established in 2008 as one of the founding departments of the School of Technology and has since grown into a research-active department offering B.Tech, M.Tech, and PhD programmes. Lateral entry students are admitted directly into the 3rd semester (second year) of the 4-year B.Tech EEE programme, effectively completing the degree in 3 years (6 semesters). The programme is AICTE approved and covers core areas including Circuit Theory, Electro-Mechanical Energy Conversion, Power Systems, Power Electronics, High Voltage Engineering, Control Systems, Signal Processing, Electrical Drives, and Renewable Energy. The total fees for the 3-year lateral entry programme amount to Rs. 4,36,000 (as per the 2026 fee structure). Seats for lateral entry are limited and subject to availability after first-year vacancies are filled. The programme is popular among diploma holders from polytechnics in Northeast India who wish to earn a full B.Tech degree and enter the power, energy, and automation sectors.

Admissions for the 2026-27 batch are currently open. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis through the university's online portal, with classes commencing in August 2026. Students are advised to apply early as lateral entry seats are limited.

ADBU B.Tech EEE Lateral FAQs

Ques. What is the difference between B.Tech EEE regular and Lateral Entry at ADBU, and which is better for a diploma holder?

Ans. The B.Tech EEE regular programme is a 4-year (8-semester) programme starting from Semester 1, open to Class XII (PCM) students. The Lateral Entry programme allows Diploma holders and B.Sc. (PCM) graduates to join directly into Semester 3, completing the degree in 3 years (6 semesters). Both lead to the same B.Tech degree from ADBU. For a diploma holder in Electrical or Electronics Engineering, lateral entry is clearly the better option as it saves one full year of study and fees while leading to the same qualification. The curriculum from Semester 3 onwards is identical for both regular and lateral entry students.

Ques. What makes the EEE department at ADBU stand out among engineering colleges in Northeast India?

Ans. The EEE department at ADBU is one of the most research-active departments in the region. It was involved in the LACHIT-1 satellite project - the first student-built satellite from Northeast India, launched in collaboration with Dhruva Space - giving students exposure to cutting-edge space technology. The department organised ICEESRE-2024, an international conference on renewable energy, and conducts joint technical workshops with IIT Guwahati on Power Electronics. It also has active PhD and M.Tech programmes with researchers working in Power Systems, Optoelectronics, Microwave Remote Sensing, and Embedded Systems. The department publishes a newsletter called WATTS NEXT and organises national-level events like the ADBU Electro Quiz.

Ques. What are the laboratory facilities available for EEE students at ADBU?

Ans. The Department of EEE at ADBU has well-equipped laboratories covering all major areas of the curriculum, including a Basic Electrical Engineering Lab, Electronic Devices and Circuits Lab, Digital Electronics Lab, Electro-Mechanical Energy Conversion Lab, Electrical and Electronic Measurements Lab, Microprocessors and Microcontrollers Lab, Power Electronics and Drives Lab, Analog Integrated Circuits Lab, Digital Signal Processing Lab, Control and Simulation Lab, and a Communication Systems Lab. The department also has research labs for PhD scholars working in Power Systems, Optoelectronics, and Embedded Systems. Joint workshops with IIT Guwahati provide additional access to advanced research infrastructure.

Ques. What are the career and placement opportunities for B.Tech EEE graduates from ADBU?

Ans. ADBU's EEE department has a placement cell that facilitates campus placements. Notable companies that have recruited from the department include Dell, Samsung, JSW, and HCL. Graduates can pursue careers in power generation and distribution companies (APDCL, AEGCL, NTPC, NHPC), automation and control industries, electronics manufacturing, defence and aerospace (DRDO, ISRO, HAL), and IT companies. The curriculum's focus on Renewable Energy, Smart Grids, and Energy Audit also opens opportunities in the growing clean energy sector. Graduates can also qualify for PSU jobs through GATE or pursue M.Tech at IITs and NITs.

Ques. Is the B.Tech EEE Lateral Entry programme at ADBU suitable for a diploma holder from a non-EEE branch?

Ans. Yes. ADBU's lateral entry eligibility allows candidates who have passed a Diploma in ANY branch of Engineering and Technology with at least 60% marks from an AICTE-approved Polytechnic to apply for B.Tech EEE Lateral Entry. Diploma holders from Civil, Mechanical, Computer Science, or other branches are eligible. However, since the EEE curriculum from Semester 3 includes subject-specific courses like Circuit Theory, Electronic Devices, and Electro-Mechanical Energy Conversion, students from non-EEE diploma backgrounds may need to put in extra effort to bridge the knowledge gap. The department's faculty is experienced in supporting students from diverse backgrounds.

Ques. What is the scope of Renewable Energy and Smart Grid studies in the B.Tech EEE programme at ADBU?

Ans. The B.Tech EEE curriculum at ADBU integrates renewable energy and smart grid topics across multiple semesters. Semester 8 includes a dedicated course on Energy Audit and Management, and the curriculum covers Power System Operation and Control, Power Electronics and Drives, and High Voltage Engineering - all of which are foundational to renewable energy systems. The department organised ICEESRE-2024, an international conference on Emerging and Environment Sustaining Renewable Energy, reflecting its strong focus on this area. The department's research in Power Systems and its collaboration with IIT Guwahati on Power Electronics workshops further strengthen the renewable energy learning environment for students.
