ADBU B.Tech Lateral ME FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between B.Tech Mechanical Engineering regular and Lateral Entry at ADBU?
Ans. The B.Tech Mechanical Engineering regular programme is a 4-year (8-semester) programme starting from Semester 1, open to Class XII (PCM) students. The Lateral Entry programme allows Diploma holders and B.Sc. (PCM) graduates to join directly into Semester 3, completing the degree in 3 years (6 semesters). Both lead to the same B.Tech degree from ADBU. Lateral entry is ideal for students who have already completed a Diploma in Mechanical or any other engineering branch and want to upgrade to a full B.Tech degree without repeating the first two years. The curriculum from Semester 3 onwards is identical for both regular and lateral entry students.
Ques. Can a Diploma holder from a non-Mechanical branch (e.g., Civil or Electrical) apply for B.Tech Mechanical Lateral Entry at ADBU?
Ans. Yes. ADBU's lateral entry eligibility allows candidates who have passed a Diploma in ANY branch of Engineering and Technology with at least 60% marks from an AICTE-approved Polytechnic to apply for B.Tech Mechanical Engineering Lateral Entry. However, since the Mechanical Engineering curriculum from Semester 3 includes subject-specific courses like Theory of Machines, Thermodynamics, and Fluid Mechanics, students from non-Mechanical diploma backgrounds may need to put in extra effort to bridge the knowledge gap in the initial semesters.
Ques. What are the laboratory and infrastructure facilities available for Mechanical Engineering students at ADBU?
Ans. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at ADBU has 13 full-fledged, well-equipped labs including an ISO 9001:2015 certified workshop, a CNC lab with 2-axis, 3-axis, and 4-axis Lathe and Milling machines as well as a Robotic arm. An exclusive Royal Enfield training centre is established within the School of Technology, providing students with direct automotive industry exposure. The department also conducts regular industrial visits, including to the Technical Innovation Hub at IIT Guwahati, and has an active MoU with Kuber Techno Craft (KTC) for industry collaboration. A 15-day skill development training programme for polytechnic students was also conducted in January 2026, reflecting the department's strong industry linkages.
Ques. What are the placement opportunities for B.Tech Mechanical Engineering graduates from ADBU?
Ans. ADBU's Mechanical Engineering department has a placement cell that facilitates campus placements. Notable companies that have recruited from the department include Royal Enfield, Cognizant Technology Solutions, ITC, and BYJU'S. The minimum package offered is approximately Rs. 2.5 LPA and the highest package is approximately Rs. 4.5 LPA (Rs. 36,000-40,000 per month). About 80% of students are placed through the campus placement process. Graduates can also pursue GATE to qualify for PSU jobs (ONGC, IOCL, BHEL, NTPC) or M.Tech admissions at IITs and NITs.
Ques. Is there a GATE coaching or preparation support available for Mechanical Engineering students at ADBU?
Ans. The department actively encourages students to appear for GATE. The curriculum is designed to cover core Mechanical Engineering topics that are tested in GATE, including Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Theory of Machines, Machine Design, Heat Transfer, and Manufacturing Engineering. The department has a track record of GATE qualifiers - a student from the department qualified GATE 2023. While there is no dedicated GATE coaching cell, faculty members provide guidance and the department organises career counselling seminars to help students plan their post-graduation paths.
Ques. What is the hostel and campus life like for Mechanical Engineering students at ADBU's Azara Campus?
Ans. B.Tech Mechanical Engineering is offered at the Azara Campus (Airport Road, Guwahati), which is conveniently located near Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. The Azara Campus has hostel facilities with fees inclusive of room charges and food at the Campus Canteen, at Rs. 33,000 per semester (plus a one-time admission fee of Rs. 1,000 and refundable caution deposit of Rs. 5,000). The campus has a vibrant student life with technical clubs, sports facilities, and regular events. The department organises workshops, symposiums, industrial visits, and expert lectures to supplement classroom learning. Students from across Northeast India and other states form a diverse and active student community.
