HNLU PhD Law FAQs
Ques. What is the eligibility for PhD in Law at HNLU Raipur?
Ans. Candidates must hold an LL.M. or equivalent postgraduate law degree from a recognized university with a minimum of 55% marks (50% for SC/ST/PwD candidates). Holders of valid UGC-NET, JRF, or SLET qualifications are exempt from the written entrance test and are directly scheduled for a personal interview. Candidates without these exemptions must appear in HNLU’s Departmental Admission Test.
Ques. Is there a fellowship or stipend for PhD scholars at HNLU?
Ans. HNLU offers a University Research Fellowship (URF) for eligible full-time PhD scholars. The URF is awarded for a maximum of 3 years, with annual renewal subject to conditions including publication or seminar participation from Year 2 onward. Scholars who qualified UGC-NET/JRF separately also receive the UGC Research Fellowship of INR 37,000 per month as their primary funding. The URF and UGC JRF cannot be held simultaneously.
Ques. What research areas are available for PhD in Law at HNLU?
Ans. HNLU has 25 research centers organized under five Schools of Excellence covering constitutional law, international trade law, digital governance, climate justice, environmental law, and human rights. The Hub-and-Spoke Research Architecture (R-HAS) allows PhD scholars to work within structured thematic centers. Scholars can also contribute to peer-reviewed publications through HNLU Press, which publishes the Journal of Law and Social Sciences and the Student Law Journal.
Ques. What is the duration and fee structure for PhD in Law at HNLU?
Ans. The minimum PhD duration at HNLU is 3 years. Annual fees are INR 1,40,000 in Year 1 (including one-time admission and other charges of INR 40,000) and INR 1,00,000 per year from Year 2 onward. The total minimum fee over 3 years is INR 3,40,000. Hostel accommodation is available for an additional INR 15,000 per year. Part-time PhD is available for working professionals.
Ques. How does the HNLU PhD admission process work?
Ans. Applicants must submit an online application during the notification window. Eligible candidates appear for the Departmental Admission Test (DAT) covering Research Aptitude and Legal subjects. Candidates must score a minimum of 50% in the DAT to qualify for the personal interview. UGC-NET/JRF holders skip the written test and directly appear for the interview. Final selection is based on combined DAT and interview performance.

Ans. Yes, HNLU Raipur provides separate hostel facilities for male and female students, including PhD scholars. Hostel charges are INR 15,000 per year.
