Ques. What is AIET and how does it differ from AILET for PhD admission at NLU Delhi?
Ans. AIET (All India Entrance Test) is the PhD-specific entrance exam conducted by NLU Delhi, separate from AILET which is used for BA LLB and LLM admissions. AIET consists of 100 MCQs: 50 on Research Methodology and 50 on Law subjects, with 0.25 marks deducted per wrong answer. UGC and CSIR JRF holders and foreign nationals are exempt from AIET.
Ques. Can UGC-JRF holders get direct admission to the PhD at NLU Delhi?
Ans. Yes. Candidates who have qualified for UGC or CSIR Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) are directly eligible for the PhD programme at NLU Delhi without appearing in AIET. Of the 34 PhD seats, 18 are exclusively reserved for UGC-JRF scholars. These candidates still need to submit an application, a research proposal, and appear for an interview at the Dwarka campus.
Ques. What fellowships are available for PhD students at NLU Delhi?
Ans. NLU Delhi offers research chair fellowships including the IPR Chair Scholarship of INR 37,000 to INR 42,000 per month and the Insolvency and Restructuring Studies Fellowship of INR 28,000 to INR 32,000 per month. UGC-JRF scholars additionally receive the UGC fellowship of INR 37,000 per month for the first two years as per UGC norms.

Ans. Candidates must hold an LLM or equivalent law degree from a recognized university with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks. SC, ST, and PwD candidates require 50% marks. Candidates with a law degree and Master’s in Social Sciences or Humanities may also apply if their research intersects with law in Public Policy or Legal Studies. Special eligibility also exists for ICSI Associates, ICAI pass-outs, and sitting judges.

Ans. The minimum 3-year PhD programme at NLU Delhi costs INR 2,25,000 in total: INR 75,000 in Year 1, INR 50,000 in Year 2, and INR 1,00,000 in Year 3 including the final evaluation fee. Students who extend beyond 3 years pay an annual fee for each additional year. Hostel accommodation costs INR 89,000 per year subject to availability.
