IIMB Certification FAQs
Ques. What is the MGNF at IIM Bangalore and is it the same as an MBA?
Ans. The Mahatma Gandhi National Fellowship is not an MBA. It is a two-year government-funded fellowship jointly designed by IIM Bangalore and the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship under the SANKALP scheme. Fellows spend time in intensive classroom sessions at IIM Bangalore and simultaneously work with district administration on skill development and governance projects. The programme leads to a Certificate in Public Policy and Management, not a degree, and is suited to graduates interested in public service rather than corporate careers.
Ques. What does the NSR Pre-doctoral Fellowship prepare you for and how is it unique?
Ans. The NSR Pre-doc is a one-year fully funded fellowship that trains candidates to apply for a doctoral programme in management. It was specifically created to increase the social diversity of management academia by supporting candidates from underrepresented backgrounds who may not have standard IIM admission profiles. Fellows complete doctoral-level coursework, work with internationally recognized IIMB faculty mentors, and develop a research proposal in one of 10 disciplines. Most NSR Pre-doc graduates go on to pursue a PhD at IIM Bangalore or other premier institutions.
Ques. How much stipend do MGNF and NSR Pre-doc fellows receive at IIM Bangalore?
Ans. MGNF fellows receive INR 50,000 per month in Year 1 and INR 60,000 per month in Year 2, funded by the Government of India. NSR Pre-doc fellows receive INR 30,000 per month plus a House Rent Allowance of INR 15,000 per month, along with a one-time laptop grant and contingency support for research. Neither programme charges tuition fees. The NSR Pre-doc requires a refundable deposit of INR 500 at the time of joining.
Ques. What is the admission process for the MGNF and does it require a CAT score?
Ans. No CAT, GMAT, or GRE score is required for MGNF admission. IIM Bangalore manages a centralised selection process covering all nine participating IIMs. The selection involves a written entrance test, a personal interview, a case analysis exercise, and a language proficiency assessment. Candidates who clear all stages are assigned to a participating IIM and a district. Since the 2026-27 cycle has not been officially announced, prospective applicants should monitor the IIMB MGNF page and the MSDE SANKALP portal for the next notification.
Ques. Who should choose MGNF over NSR Pre-doc, and vice versa?
Ans. Choose MGNF if your goal is a career in public administration, district governance, or social development and you want two years of immersive field experience combined with IIM classroom training. Choose NSR Pre-doc if your goal is academic research and you are committed to pursuing a PhD in management. MGNF is open to graduates from any discipline aged 21 to 30, while NSR Pre-doc requires a master’s degree with strong academic performance. The two programmes serve completely different career trajectories.
Ques. What career paths do MGNF fellows at IIM Bangalore typically pursue after the fellowship?
Ans. MGNF fellows develop deep expertise in governance, skill development, and rural administration during their two-year district immersion. Post-fellowship, they typically pursue careers in civil services, development sector organisations, state and central government roles, international development agencies, or policy consulting. Some also pursue advanced studies in public policy at Indian or international institutions. Since IIM Bangalore manages the central MGNF process, its fellows are often preferred by organisations that value the combination of IIM academic rigour and ground-level governance experience.
