About IIM Bangalore Ph.D

IIM Bangalore offers a five-year, full-time Ph.D in management in 10 areas, from Economics to Strategy. The institute does not publish a fixed number of seats, and each area picks its own scholars. You apply with one valid score from GMAT, GRE, CAT, GATE, NET or the IIMB Test, then take an area test or an interview. NIRF placed the institute #2 in management in 2025. IIM Bangalore Ph.D Branches and Tests

There are 10 areas, and they share one fee and one stipend but not one test list. Economics needs no score at all, Strategy does not take GATE, and Finance and Accounting does not take the IIMB Test. Five areas take no NET score. Each area also sets its own selection steps. Every area name below opens its own course page.

CAT, GMAT and GRE open all 10 areas, while GATE and the IIMB Test open 9 each. IIMB publishes no cutoff score, so a valid score only lets you apply. The shortlist then reads your marks, statement of purpose and letters. NET works only in five areas and only for some subjects; Strategy takes NET in Management, code 17, alone.

IIM Bangalore Ph.D Placements

IIMB publishes no pay figure and no placement rate for Ph.D graduates. The programme trains teachers and researchers, so most graduates join business schools. Some Indian companies, MNCs, investment banks and consulting firms also hire for research roles. Firms and institutes contact the doctoral office directly, and you can use the IIMB placement office too. You cannot take a job while you study.

Area test and interview

Which Ph.D area should you pick at IIM Bangalore?

Area
Ph.D. (Economics) (Economics)
Tests: No test score needed. Selection: area test first, then interview.
Pick it if:
You have no GMAT, GRE, CAT or GATE score: Economics is the one area that needs no test score, because every eligible applicant writes its own area test.
You do better on a written paper than in a talk: the area test decides who reaches the interview, and both marks add up to your final score.
You want to teach and research economics at a business school: the area trains scholars for academic careers, and its test follows a syllabus it publishes.
Skip it if:
You hoped a high percentile would help you: no outside score counts in this area, so a top CAT or GRE gives you no head start.
You want to skip a written test: every eligible Economics applicant writes the area test before any shortlist is made.
Ph.D. (Organizational Behavior and Human Resources) (OB and HR)
Tests: GMAT, GRE, CAT, GATE, NET or IIMB Test. Selection: area test and interview.
Pick it if:
Your NET is in Management, Psychology, Sociology or Anthropology: this area takes only six NET subjects, and these four are among them.
You want to research people and teams at work: the interview checks if you can frame a research problem and find ways to measure your ideas.
You have worked in HR or people management: the area scores the quality of your work experience at the shortlist.
Skip it if:
Your NET is in Commerce or Law: this area does not take those NET subjects, though Information Systems and Public Policy do.
You want the interview alone to decide: the final rank adds your area test score to the interview.
Ph.D. (Information Systems) (Information Systems)
Tests: GMAT, GRE, CAT, GATE, NET or IIMB Test. Selection: written test and interview.
Pick it if:
Your NET is in Computer Science, Commerce or Law: this area takes every NET subject on the IIMB list.
You want to study how firms and people use technology: the area looks for prior training in information systems and real research potential.
You have worked in IT or a tech firm: the area scores how relevant and how strong your work experience is.
Skip it if:
You want to skip a written test: shortlisted applicants sit a written ability test set by IIMB before the interview.
You plan to move to another area after year 1: IIMB does not let a scholar change area once admitted.
Ph.D. (Public Policy) (Public Policy)
Tests: GMAT, GRE, CAT, GATE, NET or IIMB Test. Selection: area test, then interview shortlist.
Pick it if:
You want your research to shape what governments do: the area shortlists on how well your interests fit its faculty's policy research.
Your NET is in Political Science or Public Administration: this area takes every NET subject on the IIMB list.
You have worked in government or the social sector: the area weighs the quality of your work experience at the shortlist.
Skip it if:
You want one round of selection: the area test comes first, and only those who do well there reach the interview.
Your research idea matches no faculty member here: fit with the faculty's interests is part of the shortlist.
Ph.D. (Strategy) (Strategy)
Tests: GMAT, GRE, CAT, NET or IIMB Test. Selection: interview only.
Pick it if:
You do better in a talk than on a test paper: Strategy has no area test, so shortlisted applicants go straight to the interview.
You want to study why some firms win and others fail: the interview looks for critical and independent thinking and an eye for puzzles in data.
Your NET is in Management: Strategy takes NET only in Management, code 17, and no other subject.
Skip it if:
Your only score is GATE: Strategy is the one area that does not take a GATE score.
Your NET is in Psychology or Economics: Strategy will not read it, so you need CAT, GMAT, GRE or the IIMB Test.
Ph.D. (Entrepreneurship) (Entrepreneurship)
Tests: GMAT, GRE, CAT, GATE or IIMB Test. Selection: two-stage test and interview.
Pick it if:
You want to research start-ups and the people who found them: the first-stage test checks how well you understand entrepreneurship in practice.
You have worked in or with a start-up: the area weighs the quality of your work experience at the shortlist.
Skip it if:
Your only score is a NET: Entrepreneurship does not take a UGC or CSIR NET score.
You want a short selection day: the first stage may take a whole day, with the interviews on the next day.
Ph.D (Decision Science) (Decision Sciences)
Tests: GMAT, GRE, CAT, GATE, NET or IIMB Test. Selection: written test on interview day.
Pick it if:
You like optimisation, statistics or machine learning: the area asks for a background in operations research, statistics or data analytics.
Your GATE or NET is in Maths, Statistics or Computer Science: the area says it gives these subjects preference.
You have research papers: publications in journals or conferences count at the shortlist.
Skip it if:
You are weak in maths: a written test on the subject is held on interview day, and it counts in your final score.
You want a business job, not an academic one: the area looks for people who aim at a career in teaching and research.
Ph.D. (Finance & Accounts) (Finance and Accounting)
Tests: GMAT, GRE, CAT or GATE. Selection: area test and interview.
Pick it if:
You have a strong CAT, GMAT, GRE or GATE score: the shortlist reads only your Class 12 and bachelor's marks and this one test score.
You are good at calculus, statistics and probability: the area test checks these topics along with your report writing.
Skip it if:
You planned to use the IIMB Test: Finance and Accounting is the one area that does not take it.
Your only score is a NET: this area does not take a UGC or CSIR NET score.
Ph.D. (Marketing) (Marketing)
Tests: GMAT, GRE, CAT, GATE or IIMB Test. Selection: interview only.
Pick it if:
You studied engineering, economics, psychology or statistics: the area says it welcomes a strong background in these subjects.
You want to research consumers, brands or pricing: faculty here work on consumer emotion, digital marketing, branding and pricing.
You prefer an interview to a written test: Marketing has no area test, so your file and the interview decide.
Skip it if:
Your only score is a NET: Marketing does not take a UGC or CSIR NET score.
You want a marketing job in a company: the programme trains academics, and IIMB says a Ph.D may not suit a corporate career.
Ph.D (Production & Operations Management) (Operations)
Tests: GMAT, GRE, CAT, GATE or IIMB Test. Selection: area test and interview.
Pick it if:
You have two to five years of work experience: the area names this as the ideal range when it shortlists.
You want to research supply chains and how goods are made: the area test follows a syllabus it publishes, so you can prepare for it.
You have a GATE score: this area takes GATE along with GMAT, GRE, CAT and the IIMB Test.
Skip it if:
Your only score is a NET: Production and Operations Management does not take a UGC or CSIR NET score.
You have no research papers: the area counts publications in relevant journals at the shortlist.
Counsellor's advice
If your test score is accepted by two areas, apply to both and put the one you want most first. You cannot change area after admission, so never list an area only because its test looks easier.

In short
IIM Kozhikode starts INR 10,000 lower a month and offers fewer areas. If your area is on offer at both, keep IIM Bangalore as the first choice and Kozhikode as the back-up.
In short
IIM Lucknow pays the lowest stipend here and a much smaller travel grant, though it has more areas. If your topic fits only an area Lucknow offers, apply there too.
In short
IIM Calcutta charges INR 2,000 more to apply and starts INR 10,000 lower a month. If your area is at both, apply to both and choose on the faculty you want to work with.

FAQs on Indian Institute of Management Bangalore Ph.D

Short answers to what students ask before they apply.

Is there any tuition fee for the Ph.D at IIM Bangalore?▾
No. Tuition is waived for Indian scholars in every area. The only fee is the application fee: INR 1,000 for one area or INR 1,500 for two. The IIMB Test costs INR 1,200 for each attempt if you use it.
How much stipend does a Ph.D scholar get?▾
Every Indian scholar gets INR 52,000 a month for five years. You also get a start-up grant of INR 80,000 in year 1, INR 30,000 a year in years 2 to 5, and up to INR 4.40 Lakhs for conference travel. Foreign nationals do not get the fellowship.
Which test do I need for Ph.D admission?▾
You need one valid score that your area takes: GMAT, GRE, CAT, GATE, UGC or CSIR NET, or the IIMB Test. Economics needs no score. Strategy does not take GATE, and Finance and Accounting does not take the IIMB Test.
Can I apply to two areas?▾
Yes. You name a first and a second area, and the fee goes up from INR 1,000 to INR 1,500. Once you are admitted to an area, you cannot change it.
What is the last date to apply for Ph.D 2027?▾
Apply by 25 Jan 2027, 5 pm. Your test score must be valid on that date. The IIMB Test is the one exception: its tests are on 25 Oct 2026 and 31 Jan 2027.
Is there a cutoff score for each area?▾
IIMB does not publish one. The shortlist reads your marks, your test score, your statement of purpose and your letters. Each area then adds its own test, interview or both.
Can I do the Ph.D part time or keep my job?▾
No. It is a full-time programme, and scholars may not take any outside job while they study.
Where do Ph.D graduates get jobs?▾
Most go into teaching and research at business schools. IIMB says some Indian companies, MNCs, investment banks and consulting firms also hire for research roles. It publishes no pay figures for Ph.D graduates.
Do I get a hostel room?▾
Usually for the first two years, if a room is free, and it may be extended after that. If you live outside, you get a house rent allowance of INR 26,500 a month.
