IIM Shillong PGPM Selection Criteria 2026

IIM Shillong PGPM admission follows a two-phase process. Phase 1 shortlists candidates for Personal Interview. Phase 2 prepares the final merit list for admission offers.

  • Phase 1 (Shortlisting) composite: CAT overall percentile carries 65% weight. Normalised Application Rating Score (NARS) carries 35% weight. NARS includes Class X, Class XII, graduation marks scores, and work experience months score.
  • Work Experience scoring (Application Rating Score): 18 to 23 months of experience earns the maximum score of 14 points. Candidates with under 7 months or over 42 months of experience score 0. The 7 to 11-month range scores 6. The 12 to 17-month range scores 12.
  • Academic diversity: IIM Shillong shortlists candidates in proportion to their academic discipline share in CAT 2026. Engineering, Commerce, Arts, Sciences, and other streams each get a proportional PI call share. This prevents any single stream from dominating the intake.
  • Phase 2 (Final Merit List) weights: CAT 40%, PI 40%, Application Rating Score (ARS) 10%, Gender Score 10%.
  • Female candidates receive a gender bonus score of 10 points out of the 10% gender weight. Male candidates score 0 on gender (as men are the majority CAT applicant pool). This is built into the official formula.
  • PI minimum cut-off: Candidates must score at least 30% in PI (OT, EWS) or 25% (SC) or 20% (ST, DA) to be included in the merit list. Failing PI minimum disqualifies the candidate regardless of CAT score.

As per a Reddit Discussion on IIM Shillong admissions, students note that the high gender bonus and academic diversity shortlisting make non-engineering profiles (Commerce, Arts) more competitive here than at most other IIMs. Candidates with 18 to 24 months of work experience are in the sweet spot for NARS score.

Key Insight: IIM Shillong’s PGPM 2026-28 admission is closed. For PGPM 2027-29, register for CAT 2026 before September 15, 2026 and opt for IIM Shillong during registration. A CAT score without selecting IIM Shillong at registration time will disqualify you from shortlisting.

Ans. For General and EWS candidates, the minimum CAT cutoff is 75 percentile in each of VARC, DILR, and QA sections. SC candidates need a minimum of 60 percentile in each section. ST and DA candidates need 50 percentile in each section. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee a shortlist call.

Ques. How does IIM Shillong calculate the final merit list for PGPM?

Ans. The Phase 2 final merit score is: CAT 40% + PI 40% + Application Rating Score 10% + Gender Score 10%. Female candidates receive a gender score of 10 points. Male candidates receive 0 on gender. Candidates must also clear a minimum PI score (30% for OT/EWS, 25% for SC, 20% for ST/DA) to be included in the merit list.

Ques. Does work experience help for IIM Shillong PGPM shortlisting?

Ans. Yes. Work experience is part of the Application Rating Score used in Phase 1 shortlisting. The sweet spot is 18 to 23 months, which earns the maximum score of 14 points. Freshers (under 7 months) and candidates with 42 or more months of experience score 0. This is built into the official admission process document.

Ques. Is there a management quota or direct admission at IIM Shillong?

Ans. No. IIM Shillong is a government-funded institution. It does not have management quota, NRI quota, or direct admission seats. All PGPM seats follow Government of India reservation rules and are filled strictly through the CAT-based merit process.

Ans. Register for CAT 2026 at iimcat.ac.in before September 15, 2026. Select IIM Shillong as a preferred institute during CAT registration. Appear in CAT 2026 on November 29, 2026. After the result, check for the IIM Shillong shortlist in mid-January 2027 on iimshillong.ac.in.

IIM Shillong: 5 Answered Questions

With 93.1/74/92.5 in 10, 12, UG with no work experience, how much percentile can get me SPJIMR, NMIMS, and baby IIM like Shillong?

Himani Daryani
Akriti Guptalives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

Having no work experience is not the main barrier to get into B schools. Your 10th and UG marks are very good and 12th marks are decent, however, I want to make it clear that IIM Shillong is not among the baby IIMs or the new generation iims.

It is far better than new iims and making place among BLACKI. SPJIMR accepts CAT score for its admission and you will be requiring above 94 percentile for open category. NMIMS accept SNAP exam score. And for IIM shillong 95+ percentile is required.

Should I take admission in IIM Shillong this year or prepare again next year?

Arshit JainIndian Institute of Management Nagpur

If you want to target ABC L, having a 70% BE may be a concern. However, it's important to consider your risk appetite and the rationale behind pursuing an MBA. Some people may choose to wait and apply to higher-ranked IIMs, while others may decide to take the risk and apply to a school like IIM Shillong. It's also worth considering that getting into a college with better rankings can be a great feeling, but you should also weigh the risk and return of your decision.

It might be helpful to consider the pros and cons of different options and try to get a bigger picture of your goals before making a decision. Keep in mind that some people with lower GMAT scores or undergraduate grades have been able to get into top schools like Kellogg's and Michigan, while others have been successful in technical fields without pursuing an MBA. Ultimately, it's important to consider your individual circumstances and make a decision that is right for you.

How hard is it to get into IIM Shillong?

Veda Burman
Aprajita ShuklaIIM Shillong

The competition for admission to most Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) is typically fierce, as there are a large number of highly qualified candidates vying for a limited number of spots. While some IIMs may be more selective than others, the difference in the opportunities available to students after graduating from one IIM versus another is usually not significant, with most top recruiters hiring from a range of IIMs. This is especially true for IIMs like IIM Shillong and IIM Trichy, which have strong placement records and productive faculty.

To give a sense of the level of competition at IIM Shillong, it may be helpful to consider the percentile scores that are typically required for shortlisting. While an older IIM like IIM Ahmedabad or IIM Lucknow may not consider candidates with a CAT percentile score below 99% for most general category students (with some exceptions for certain groups such as economics/art students, females, and other deserving categories), IIM Shillong or IIM Trichy may consider candidates with a score as low as 98% or even slightly lower.

It's worth noting that this year, the competition for admission to IIM Shillong may be somewhat less intense due to the expansion of the batch sizes at the ABCL campuses. Campus A and B are planning batches of 450 students, with a goal of increasing to 650 students in the next few years. As a result, candidates may have a better chance of being admitted to IIM Shillong this year.

Overall, the admission process at IIM Shillong involves an initial review of the CAT merit list, followed by the consideration of scores for academic proficiency and the selection of a pool of 1000 students for every 200 seats at the campus for interviews. During the interview stage, only the candidates' CAT scores and their performance in the interview are taken into account. The final selection is made based on the ability of the candidates to adapt to the challenges of the corporate world and their potential to excel academically, as indicated by their high CAT scores.

Should I join IIM Shillong? How good is it compared to other older IIMs, especially for finance?

Kedar NathPGDM from Indian Institute of Management Shillong (2019)

You are asking whether you should take it or not so I will assume that you are planning to take a drop year otherwise. However, preparing and attempting CAT again is not a cakewalk. It requires a lot of determination and motivation and still does not guarantee that you will get a call from an old IIM.

IIM Shillong is rather a good choice for finance. You can contact some of its alumni to get more information on the same. Since your profile is good, Indore is also a good option for you.

But if you are adamant about joining the old IIMs, then focus on one single goal. Getting maximum percentile in CAT. Start preparing as soon as you decide to drop the year. Anything above 99.7 will guarantee you a call from one of the older IIMs. I have seen many people attempt CAT 3-4 times just to get into their choice of IIMs.

It all comes down to your determination. Like I said, dropping a year requires a lot of determination, so choose this path wisely. Else consider the various other options you have.
