Thapar M.Tech FAQs

Ques. Which GATE paper should I use for Thapar M.Tech VLSI Design versus Environmental Science and Technology?

Ans. For VLSI Design at Thapar, the required GATE paper is EC (Electronics and Communication Engineering). Candidates with an EEE or Electronics Instrumentation background typically use the EC or IN paper. For Environmental Science and Technology, Thapar accepts the ES (Environmental Science and Engineering) paper as well as scores in BT, CH (Chemical Engineering), and CE (Civil Engineering). If you hold a B.Tech in Chemical Engineering, using the CH paper gives you the best-fit option for the Environmental Science and Technology stream.

Ques. Can I apply for Thapar M.Tech without a GATE score, and will I still get the ₹12,400 stipend?

Ans. Non-GATE candidates can apply through the Thapar PG Entrance Test route, and admission is possible based on merit. However, the AICTE stipend of ₹12,400 per month is available only to GATE-qualified candidates who serve as Teaching Assistants. Non-GATE admits who are selected may receive the Thapar Teaching Assistantship of around ₹8,000 per month subject to department approval and CGPA maintenance. There is no mechanism to claim the AICTE stipend retroactively if you clear GATE after joining.

Ques. Is the Thapar M.Tech research thesis compulsory, and how is the topic assigned?

Ans. Yes, a research thesis is mandatory across all three M.Tech specialisations and typically spans the third and fourth semesters. Topics are assigned in consultation with a faculty supervisor during the second semester, and are usually aligned with active funded research projects in the department. Students in Biotechnology work on projects under DST or DBT-funded labs; VLSI Design students often work on FPGA and chip design problems tied to industry collaborations; and Environmental Science students may work on pollution monitoring or EIA studies. Choice of supervisor significantly shapes the thesis scope.

Ques. What is the placement record of Thapar M.Tech graduates in Biotechnology and Environmental Science, and do companies recruit on campus?

Ans. Thapar’s central placement cell facilitates campus recruitment for M.Tech students, though placement volumes are higher for Computer Science, ECE, and Mechanical compared to Biotechnology and Environmental Science specialisations. Biotech graduates typically find roles in biopharma, food and agri-tech R&D, and public sector research labs. Environmental Science graduates pursue positions in EIA consulting, pollution control boards, and sustainability roles in manufacturing firms. VLSI Design graduates from Thapar have a stronger placement record given chip design demand from semiconductor companies. Many M.Tech students also opt for doctoral programmes using their thesis work as a foundation.

Ques. Can sponsored or part-time candidates apply for the Thapar M.Tech programmes?

Ans. Thapar does consider sponsored candidates for M.Tech admissions through a separate category. Sponsored candidates are typically those deputed by a government organisation, PSU, or registered company and may not be required to appear for GATE. They are generally not eligible for the AICTE stipend since the employer bears the cost. Part-time M.Tech options are limited; most departments offer only full-time programmes. Candidates seeking sponsored admission should contact the respective department directly or check the current admissions brochure on the Thapar portal for the sponsored quota details.
