✓ Opt for this if

  • NAAC A++ accreditation, NIRF top-100 university rank, and DST-supported research infrastructure are priorities at a competitive fee of INR 2.6 lakh to 3.2 lakh for 3 years.
  • The research area is Pharmacy (NIRF rank 22), Bioinformatics, Mathematical Sciences, or Computer Science, where Banasthali has dedicated centres and published output.
  • Two admission cycles per year allow entry in June or December without waiting a full year for the next opportunity.

✗ Skip if

  • A UGC-NET JRF or GATE score opens seats at a central university, NIT, or IIT, where fellowship rates (INR 37,000 per month JRF) are higher than any guaranteed Banasthali institutional stipend and research networks are stronger.
  • The research topic requires advanced lab equipment in Engineering hardware or cutting-edge technology, where technically focused universities are better equipped.
  • Male candidates find the residential campus and women-focused institutional culture a poor personal fit for a 3-plus year PhD tenure.

Banasthali PhD FAQs

Ques. Is the Banasthali Vidyapith PhD open to male candidates or only women?

Ans. Banasthali Vidyapith’s UG and PG programmes are exclusively for women. The PhD programme is open to candidates of all genders. Male scholars can apply, appear in the RET, and enrol. The campus is a residential women’s university, so male scholars typically work from off-campus or use day-access facilities rather than living in university hostels. Confirm the current on-campus access arrangement with the Doctoral Committee before applying.

Ques. What is the Banasthali RET and how difficult is it compared to UGC-NET?

Ans. The Banasthali Research Entrance Test is a 100-question MCQ paper of 2 hours: 50 questions on Research Aptitude and 50 questions on the subject. There is no negative marking and the passing threshold is 50% (45% for reserved categories). UGC-NET is considerably harder, with a national competitive percentile cutoff. For candidates who have not cleared NET or GATE, the RET is the accessible route. Those who clear any national-level qualifying exam (NET, SLET, GATE, GPAT, or M.Phil with 55%) are fully exempted.

Ques. Does Banasthali provide a PhD stipend or fellowship to its scholars?

Ans. Banasthali does not guarantee an institutional PhD stipend to all enrolled scholars. Scholars who hold a UGC-JRF or CSIR fellowship receive that fellowship’s national rate (INR 37,000 per month rising to INR 42,000 as SRF) directly from the granting body. Scholars admitted through the RET route without a national fellowship must arrange their own funding. Sponsored project-specific JRF positions (INR 25,000 to 28,000 per month) are occasionally advertised on banasthali.org when funded research projects have vacant positions.

Ques. Which departments at Banasthali are best for PhD research in terms of infrastructure?

Ans. Pharmacy (NIRF rank 22) is the strongest research department by national ranking. Bio-Sciences and Biotechnology, Chemistry, and Computer Science have DST-supported and ICICI-endowed centres. The DST Centre for Research in Mathematical Sciences is one of very few such nationally funded maths centres at a private university in India. Candidates should contact the prospective supervisor directly to confirm active publication output and project funding in their chosen area before applying.

Ques. How does Banasthali PhD compare to a Rajasthan state university PhD on fees and quality?

Ans. Rajasthan state universities (University of Rajasthan, MDS University Ajmer, MLSU Udaipur) charge lower fees, often INR 20,000 to 80,000 total for 3 years. Banasthali’s NAAC A++ grade, NIRF top-100 ranking, and DST-supported infrastructure are considerably stronger than most state universities in the region. The INR 2.6 lakh to 3.2 lakh at Banasthali is justified by this gap in accreditation and ranking. For Pharmacy specifically, Banasthali’s NIRF rank 22 far exceeds any state university in Rajasthan.
