Ques. What is the difference between full-time and part-time Ph.D. programs at VMRF-DU?
Ans. Full-time Ph.D. scholars must dedicate themselves exclusively to research and cannot undertake any employment or pursue other programs simultaneously. They are eligible for research fellowships (Rs. 25,000-30,000 per month) and must maintain 85% residential attendance. Part-time scholars (external) can continue employment and must complete a minimum of 45 days per year of residential attendance at the constituent college. Full-time scholars typically complete their Ph.D. in 3-5 years with intensive research focus.
Ques. Are candidates with a 4-year bachelor's degree eligible for Ph.D. admission?
Ans. Yes, candidates with a 4-year/8-semester bachelor's degree are eligible if they have minimum 75% marks in aggregate. However, candidates with a 1-year or 2-year master's degree require only 55% marks. A relaxation of 5% marks is provided for SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer), EWS, and differently-abled candidates. M.Phil. degree holders with 55% marks are also eligible.
Ques. What happens if I don't qualify in the entrance examination?
Ans. Candidates must secure a minimum of 50% marks in the entrance examination to be eligible for the interview stage. A relaxation of 5% marks (45% instead of 50%) is allowed for SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer), EWS, and differently-abled candidates. If you don't meet the qualifying marks, you will not be called for the interview and your application will not proceed further. However, you can reapply in the next admission session.
Ques. Can I work while pursuing full-time Ph.D. at VMRF-DU?
Ans. No, full-time Ph.D. scholars are strictly prohibited from undertaking any assignment, employment, or pursuing any other program of study simultaneously. This is a mandatory requirement for full-time enrollment. However, if you need to work, you can opt for the part-time Ph.D. program (external) which allows employment outside VMRF-DU institutions.
Ques. What is the Research Advisory Committee (RAC) and what role does it play?
Ans. The Research Advisory Committee comprises your research supervisor (convener), two experts (one internal from your institution and one external from outside VMRF-DU), and a co-supervisor if applicable. The RAC reviews your research proposal, guides your research work, identifies required coursework, reviews your pre-synopsis presentation, and acts as an Academic Integrity Panel for plagiarism checks. The RAC meets periodically to monitor your progress and provide mentorship throughout your Ph.D. journey.
Ques. What are the publication requirements for Ph.D. completion at VMRF-DU?
Ans. While specific publication requirements may vary by discipline, VMRF-DU emphasizes research publications in indexed journals (Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, or UGC CARE listed journals) and presentations at national/international conferences. The university monitors scholar progress annually based on publications, conference papers, and research capacity-building activities.
