SNU Ph.D. (English) FAQs

Ques. Is the written entrance test at SNU mandatory even if I have cleared UGC-NET JRF or GATE?

Ans. Yes, the written entrance test is compulsory for all candidates applying to the PhD English program at SNU, without exception. The university has explicitly stated that the test will not be waived for candidates who have cleared national examinations such as CSIR-UGC NET-JRF, DBT-JRF, GATE-JRF, JEST, ICMR-JRF, NBHM, CAT, GRE, GMAT, or any other national exam. This is a distinctive feature of the SNU PhD English admission process. The test is 2 hours long and assesses multiple-choice comprehension, reading comprehension, and essay writing to evaluate critical thinking and writing abilities.

Ques. What should the research proposal contain, and how important is it for selection?

Ans. The research proposal is a mandatory document that must be uploaded at the time of application. A strong research proposal should clearly articulate the research question or area of inquiry, situate it within existing scholarship, identify the theoretical or methodological approach, and explain why the candidate is suited to pursue this research. The selection committee uses the proposal to assess whether the candidate's research interests align with the expertise of the faculty in the Department of English. Candidates are strongly advised to review the faculty research profiles on the department website and tailor their proposal accordingly, as the university explicitly states that candidates will only be selected if their research interests coincide with those of the faculty.

Ques. What areas of English studies can I pursue for my PhD at SNU?

Ans. The Department of English at SNU is equipped to offer supervision across a range of areas including English literary history, world literature, critical and cultural theory, translation studies, creative writing, visual theory, postcolonial studies, and related interdisciplinary areas. The department's MA program also covers these areas, giving an indication of faculty expertise. Prospective PhD applicants should visit the Department of English page on the SNU website to review individual faculty research interests and identify potential supervisors before applying, as alignment with faculty expertise is a key selection criterion.

Ques. What is the financial support available, and is it sufficient to cover living expenses in Greater Noida?

Ans. Full-time PhD students receive a monthly stipend of INR 45,000 (Years 1-2) and INR 50,000 (Years 3-5), a tuition fee waiver of INR 60,000 per year, and a hostel subsidy of INR 60,000 per year. The subsidised hostel fee (single room, AC, common toilet) is INR 1,36,000 per year (2026-27 rates). Mess and laundry charges are additional. Given that Greater Noida has a relatively lower cost of living compared to central Delhi, the stipend is generally considered sufficient to cover hostel, mess, and personal expenses comfortably, with some savings possible especially in the later years when the stipend increases to INR 50,000 per month.

Ques. How long does the PhD in English typically take, and what is the thesis requirement?

Ans. The PhD in English at SNU is structured as a 5-year program, with the doctoral award guaranteed for up to 5 years subject to academic milestones. The program begins with coursework in the initial semesters, followed by thesis research. The thesis is expected to be between 80,000 and 1,00,000 words. If a student requires more than 5 years to complete the thesis, the stipend and hostel subsidy will no longer be available, and the student will need to pay the full tuition fee without the waiver. Students are advised to plan their research timeline carefully and maintain satisfactory academic progress throughout the program.

Ques. Can I apply for the PhD in English at SNU if my postgraduate degree is not in English?

Ans. Yes, the eligibility criteria state that candidates must have a minimum of 55% aggregate in a postgraduate degree in any discipline, not necessarily English. However, the admission process includes a written test specifically designed to assess English literary and critical competence, and the interview will evaluate research aptitude in the field of English studies. Candidates from non-English backgrounds would need to demonstrate sufficient mastery of the fundamentals of English literary and critical studies through the written test and interview. Additionally, the research proposal must align with the research interests of the faculty, so a strong grounding in English studies is essential regardless of the formal degree background.
