Ques. What is the difference between IIM Ranchi PhD Executive and the regular PhD?

Ans. The regular PhD at IIM Ranchi is a full-time residential programme typically funded by an MHRD fellowship, intended for fresh graduates or early-career researchers. The Executive PhD is designed for senior working professionals, runs on a weekend online model with campus immersions, requires no entrance exam, and does not carry a stipend. Both lead to a doctoral degree from IIM Ranchi but serve different candidate profiles and career stages.

Ques. Is there a stipend or scholarship for IIM Ranchi PhD Executive students?

Ans. The PhD Executive Programme does not offer an MHRD fellowship or monthly stipend, as it is designed for employed senior professionals. The programme fee of INR 18,50,000 covers tuition, campus immersions, and international immersion. Most participants are self-funded or sponsored by their employing organizations. Education loans from empanelled banks and NBFCs may be available for eligible participants who require financing support.

Ques. Does IIM Ranchi PhD Executive carry the same degree as the regular PhD?

Ans. Yes, successful graduates of the IIM Ranchi Executive PhD Programme receive a doctoral degree from the Indian Institute of Management Ranchi, an institution of national importance. The degree does not distinguish between the executive and regular tracks on the certificate itself. However, the research output, thesis, and examination standards are equivalent to those applied to the full-time doctoral programme, ensuring academic rigor and credibility of the qualification.

IIM Ranchi: 2 Answered Questions

I've been selected for the Young India Fellowship as well as for IIM Ranchi. Which one should I choose?

Amanda Marie Jacob
Anjali MaheshwariStudied at Indian Institute of Management Ranchi (Graduated 2019)

YIF and IIM Ranchi are both very different yet equally good.

YIF is more like a social learning program that includes diverse topics such as Economics, Shakespeare, Art, and Group Dynamics. You develop a comprehensive understanding of the social problems around you. I have seen many friends forgoing the offers from top B Schools just for this program.

The programs offered at IIM Ranchi on the other hand will give you an insight into the corporate world. As you can see both options are extremely different in their essence. So choose wisely looking at the big picture.

How do the new HR programs of IIM Ranchi, NMIMS, and XIMB measure up to the established ones of XLRI, TISS, MDI and SCMHRD?

Apoorv AshutoshFormer PhD Candidate at Indian Institute of Management Lucknow (2017–2020)

The simple answer to your question is no, the new HR programs of IIM Ranchi, NMIMS, or XIMB are not at par with the established ones XLRI, TISS, MDI, and SCMHRD. The established programs especially that of XLRI are the epitome of HR programs. They cannot be compared to the new ones at any given level or parameter.

  • Faculty: The professors of XLRI are renowned throughout the industry for their competency. They specialize in almost every domain one can think of be it Law, Competency Modeling, Compensation, or Performance Management.
  • Peers: It’s the cream students who get the opportunity to get into a prestigious college like XLRI. You can see tough competition between the finest students at college. Every individual has a valuable opinion and stands to contradict others. Their thinking pattern is broad and given a case study, they look at all angles from accounting to finance to laws while proposing the solution. The situation at TISS is also quite similar.

Now one can say that the curriculum can be replicated and learned faculty can be sought to match the quality of the HR program at these institutes. But the truth is faculty and curriculum are the main but not the only factors that determine an institute's worth. Its own culture, ethics, and background have a lot to do with the programs it offers.

So one cannot match XLRIs programs no matter how much they try.
