IIT Bhilai Admission Process
IIT Bhilai B.Tech admissions are entirely through JEE Advanced — the most competitive engineering entrance examination in India — followed by centralised JoSAA seat allocation. Candidates must first qualify JEE Main (top 2,50,000 rank) to be eligible for JEE Advanced.
B.Tech Admission (JEE Advanced)
Candidates must have cleared 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics with a minimum of 75% aggregate (65% for SC/ST/PwD). A valid JEE Advanced rank is required, with no upper age limit from 2023 onwards.
- Appear in JEE Main (Session 1 or 2) and qualify for JEE Advanced eligibility (top 2,50,000 JEE Main ranks).
- Register for and appear in JEE Advanced 2027 (tentatively May 2027).
- After the JEE Advanced result, register for JoSAA 2027 counselling. Add IIT Bhilai and preferred branch to the choice list.
- Accept the JoSAA allotted seat within the deadline and confirm admission by paying the seat acceptance fee.
- Report to IIT Bhilai for document verification and enrolment in August 2027.
IIT Bhilai CSE is the most competitive branch with a JEE Advanced closing rank of approximately 6,384 (General, Round 1, 2025). DSAI closes at approximately 7,568. ECE and EE close in the 8,000 to 12,000 range. Metallurgical and Materials Engineering is the most accessible branch, closing at approximately 14,916 for General category candidates.
M.Tech Admission (GATE)
M.Tech applicants must hold a B.Tech or equivalent with a minimum 60% aggregate and a valid GATE score. Admission is through CCMT. GATE-qualified M.Tech students are eligible for a fellowship of INR 12,400 per month from AICTE.
M.Sc Admission (JAM)
M.Sc admissions are through JAM (Joint Admission to M.Sc). Candidates apply in the relevant subject paper — Mathematics for M.Sc Mathematics and Computing, Physics for M.Sc Physics, Chemistry for M.Sc Chemistry — and seats are allocated through JoSAA/JOSAA counselling.
Ph.D. and Executive M.Tech
Ph.D. admissions are conducted biannually (January and July) through GATE, NET, or IIT Bhilai’s own entrance test followed by a personal interview. Executive M.Tech is for working professionals and is admitted directly by IIT Bhilai based on work experience and a shortlisting interview, without requiring GATE scores.

IIT Bhilai Campus and Infrastructure
IIT Bhilai’s permanent campus at Kutelabhata, Bhilai spans 442 acres in Durg district, Chhattisgarh. The campus is well-connected to Bhilai and Raipur, with road and rail connectivity from Raipur airport (approximately 80 km). The Bhilai-Durg urban agglomeration provides reasonable access to amenities, and the proximity to the Bhilai Steel Plant makes it an active location for core engineering industrial engagement.
Campus infrastructure includes departmental research laboratories, smart classrooms, a central library, a computer centre, sports facilities (including a cricket ground, basketball courts, and a swimming pool), student activity centres, and on-campus hostels for male and female students. The institute maintains strict anti-ragging policies and 24/7 campus security.
IIT Bhilai benefits from the IIT brand’s research infrastructure support — funded labs, funded faculty positions, and a research culture comparable to older IITs. The smaller student body creates a more personalised learning environment, with lower student-to-faculty ratios than older, larger IITs. The DSAI and EV Technology specialisations reflect the institute’s forward-looking focus on emerging technology disciplines.
