IACS Admission Dates 2027

IACS conducts admissions separately for its PhD and BS-MS programmes. PhD admissions run in two annual cycles. The Spring cycle begins in January and the Autumn cycle begins in July. The Spring 2027 intake is currently active. BS-MS admissions for the 2027 batch are expected to begin in early 2027 through a direct entrance examination conducted by IACS.

IACS Courses and Fees

IACS offers three main programme types. The BS-MS is the flagship undergraduate research programme for students seeking a research career from the undergraduate level. The Integrated M.Sc plus PhD in Biological Sciences combines coursework and research over five years. PhD programmes admit students across all six schools in each semester, with intake sizes kept deliberately small to maintain the quality of doctoral supervision.

The fees above are institutional fees only. PhD students additionally receive monthly fellowship stipends under CSIR-JRF, UGC-JRF, or DST-INSPIRE that are entirely separate from and above the annual registration fee. The net cost of a PhD at IACS is effectively offset by the fellowship income, making it a financially accessible programme.

IACS Admission Process

IACS runs a merit-based, research-oriented selection process for all its programmes. There is no common national examination for BS-MS admission at IACS. The institute conducts its own entrance test each year.

BS-MS Eligibility and Selection: Candidates must have completed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics or Biology with a minimum of 60 per cent marks. Selection involves a written entrance examination covering fundamental science topics, followed by a personal interview for shortlisted candidates. Between 25 and 30 seats are available per stream. IACS draws applications from students who have also appeared in JEE and other competitive science examinations, as the entrance test assesses scientific aptitude and problem-solving ability.

PhD Eligibility and Selection: Candidates require a valid qualifying score in JEST (for Physical Sciences and Theoretical Computer Science), CSIR-NET or UGC-NET (for Chemical Sciences and Biological Sciences), GATE (for Materials Science and related disciplines), or NBHM (for Mathematical Sciences). Eligible candidates are called to IACS for a written test and interview. Admission is purely merit-based, with reservations as per Government of India norms.

Integrated M.Sc + PhD (Biological Sciences): Selection follows the same process as PhD in Biological Sciences. A valid CSIR-NET or UGC-NET score is the primary eligibility criterion, followed by an IACS interview.

IACS Career Outcomes

IACS does not operate a campus placement programme. The institute trains students exclusively for careers in academic research and scientific institutions. Career outcomes are measured by the quality of postdoctoral and faculty placements rather than industry packages.

BS-MS graduates from IACS typically proceed to PhD programmes at IISc Bangalore, TIFR Mumbai, IISER campuses, central universities, and international universities in the United States, Europe, and Japan. IACS BS-MS graduates are known to perform well in national fellowship entrance tests such as CSIR-NET and GATE, securing admission to competitive PhD programmes with full fellowship support.

PhD and Integrated programme graduates go on to postdoctoral positions at national research institutes and universities globally. Career pathways include faculty positions at IITs, IISERs, and central universities, research scientist roles at CSIR laboratories, DAE and DRDO research centres, and national laboratory positions. A strong alumni network within the Indian scientific community provides IACS graduates with access to research opportunities across disciplines.

IACS Scholarships

IACS programmes are structured such that most students receive institutional or national financial support for the full duration of their studies. The fellowship landscape for research students at IACS is among the most comprehensive in Indian academia.

DST-INSPIRE Scholarship (BS-MS): BS-MS students are eligible for the DST-INSPIRE Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE), which provides INR 80,000 per year along with an INR 20,000 annual mentorship grant for the five-year programme. This covers a significant portion of living and study costs for undergraduate research students.

CSIR-JRF and UGC-JRF (PhD and Integrated M.Sc+PhD): Students qualifying through CSIR-NET or UGC-NET receive the Junior Research Fellowship stipend of INR 37,000 per month for the first two years, upgraded to the Senior Research Fellowship stipend of INR 42,000 per month from the third year onward.

NBHM Scholarship: Students pursuing PhD in Mathematical Sciences may apply for the National Board for Higher Mathematics scholarship, which provides monthly financial support covering the full doctoral duration at rates set by DAE.

DST-INSPIRE PhD Fellowship: Students who qualify through DST-INSPIRE for PhD research receive INR 31,000 per month for the first two years and INR 35,000 per month for the remaining years, along with a research contingency grant.

IACS Campus and Infrastructure

The IACS campus in Jadavpur is a compact urban research campus built around six dedicated Schools of Science. Each school operates specialised wet and dry laboratories for advanced experimental and computational research in its discipline. The Chemical Sciences school is equipped with NMR, mass spectrometry, and X-ray crystallography facilities. The Physical Sciences school operates laser spectroscopy and condensed matter physics laboratories.

The IACS central library holds an extensive collection of research monographs and provides digital access to major scientific databases and journals. Residential accommodation is provided to research students on campus as part of their fellowship arrangement. The campus also houses a museum commemorating the scientific contributions of C.V. Raman, who conducted his Nobel Prize-winning research here over a period of more than two decades. Jadavpur is well-connected by road and by the Jadavpur Metro station, located within close distance of the campus.
