PPU M.Pharm FAQs
Ques. What makes M.Pharm in Drug Discovery and Drug Development different from other M.Pharm specialisations?
Ans. Unlike conventional M.Pharm specialisations such as Pharmaceutics or Pharmacology which focus on formulation or drug action respectively, Drug Discovery and Drug Development is a research-intensive specialisation that covers the entire lifecycle of a new drug, from identifying a biological target and designing a drug molecule to preclinical testing, clinical trials, and regulatory approval. It integrates medicinal chemistry, molecular biology, computational drug design, and pharmacokinetics, making it ideal for students who want to pursue careers in pharmaceutical R&D, biotech, or drug regulatory affairs.
Ques. Is GPAT mandatory for M.Pharm (Drug Discovery and Drug Development) admission at Patliputra University?
Ans. GPAT is the preferred entrance examination and GPAT-qualified candidates are given priority in the merit list. However, in cases where seats remain vacant after GPAT-based admissions, some affiliated colleges may admit candidates based on B.Pharm merit. Appearing for GPAT is strongly recommended as it not only improves admission chances but also makes you eligible for the AICTE PG Scholarship of INR 12,400 per month, which is a substantial financial benefit over the 2-year programme duration.
Ques. What career opportunities are available after M.Pharm in Drug Discovery and Drug Development?
Ans. Graduates can pursue careers as research scientists, medicinal chemists, or drug development associates in pharmaceutical companies such as Sun Pharma, Dr. Reddy's, Cipla, and Lupin, as well as in contract research organisations (CROs) like Syngene, Jubilant Biosys, and Divi's Laboratories. Regulatory affairs roles at CDSCO, FDA-related consulting firms, and biotech startups are also strong career paths. Graduates can further pursue Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences or Medicinal Chemistry for academic and advanced research careers. The growing emphasis on new drug development in India makes this specialisation increasingly valuable.
Ques. Does Patliputra University offer research facilities for M.Pharm (Drug Discovery and Drug Development) students?
Ans. M.Pharm students at Patliputra University affiliated colleges have access to laboratory facilities for pharmaceutical research as part of the PCI-mandated curriculum. The programme includes a mandatory research dissertation in the final semester. However, the depth of research infrastructure varies by affiliated college. Students seeking advanced research exposure are advised to visit and assess the laboratory facilities of the specific affiliated college before confirming admission. Colleges with well-equipped medicinal chemistry and pharmacology labs will provide a better research experience for this specialisation.
Ques. GPAT 2026 has already been conducted. Can I still apply for M.Pharm (Drug Discovery and Drug Development) at Patliputra University for 2026-27?
Ans. Yes, if you have appeared for GPAT 2026 (conducted on March 7, 2026) and have a valid GPAT 2026 scorecard, you can apply for M.Pharm (Drug Discovery and Drug Development) admission at Patliputra University for the 2026-27 session. The PPU PG admission portal is open until April 30, 2026. If you have not appeared for GPAT 2026, you may still be considered for admission based on B.Pharm merit, subject to seat availability. For GPAT 2027, registration is expected to open in December 2026.
Ques. How does the fee structure of M.Pharm (Drug Discovery and Drug Development) at Patliputra University compare to private pharmacy colleges offering the same specialisation?
Ans. M.Pharm (Drug Discovery and Drug Development) at Patliputra University affiliated government colleges costs only INR 10,240 for the entire 2-year programme (university fee component), which is significantly lower than private pharmacy colleges in India where fees for this specialisation can range from INR 80,000 to INR 2,00,000 per year. When combined with the AICTE PG Scholarship of INR 12,400 per month for GPAT-qualified candidates, the effective cost of the programme becomes negligible, making it an extremely cost-effective option for deserving students.
