What is UT Arlington GESP?

UT Arlington GESP, short for Gateways to English Success Program, is an intensive English course for graduate admits who did not meet UTA’s language cutoffs.

It sits inside UTA’s English Language Institute (ELI). The program covers three areas: writing, reading and listening or speaking. Students take it before or alongside their graduate coursework.

The program does one job. It bridges the gap between a graduate offer and the university’s minimum English score. UTA asks for IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 79 or Duolingo 100 for graduate admission. If your score is below the cutoff, the department can still admit you under a conditional letter. GESP is the route to lift that condition.

Each of the three GESP courses is discipline-specific. Reading assignments pull from real journals in your field. Writing tasks ask for literature reviews and research style papers. Listening or speaking work includes accent training and short teaching presentations.

Weekly one-on-one meetings with your instructor track your progress. GESP registration does not happen through MyMav. The ELI coordinator handles it directly.

Who Can Enrol in UTA GESP?

You can enrol in UT Arlington GESP only if you already hold a graduate admission offer from UTA, even if that offer is conditional.

The eligible groups are simple:

• Applicants admitted to a UTA master’s or PhD program with English scores below cutoff
• Students admitted on a provisional or conditional basis who need to prove language readiness
• Current UTA graduate students flagged for extra English support

Undergraduates and non-admitted applicants cannot join GESP. If you do not yet have an admission letter, GESP is not your first step. The groups that use GESP the most include:

• Indian and South Asian students with a low speaking or writing sub-score
• Students who missed one section of IELTS but cleared the overall band
• Applicants with GRE or GMAT scores strong on quant but weak on verbal

GESP Entrance Test and Scoring

The GESP entrance test is a four-skill placement exam that decides which GESP courses you must take at UT Arlington.

Every student flagged for GESP sits for the placement test before the first day of classes. You need to book the slot at least two days in advance. Bring a photo ID and proof of test payment. The entrance fee is credited to your GESP tuition once you register.

The scoring works on a six-point band, one score per skill. Here is what each band means:

Get a 6 or higher in all four skills and you have cleared UTA’s language rule. Score a 4 or 5 in any skill and you register for that specific GESP course. You only pay for the courses your scores flag.

GESP Course Fees for Indian Students

UT Arlington GESP costs USD 2,000 (around INR 1.9 lakh) per course in Fall and Spring, and USD 1,300 (around INR 1.24 lakh) per course in Summer. Fees are charged per course, not per program. Most students end up in one or two courses based on their placement scores. A student who fails only speaking will pay for one course. A student who fails three skills will pay for three.

Books and materials are included in tuition. GESP does not add a separate housing, insurance or health fee. Those still apply as part of your regular UTA international student billing.

What UTA GESP Courses Cover

UT Arlington GESP runs three courses: Writing, Reading and Listening or Speaking, all built around graduate-level academic English. Each course is discipline-specific. Instructors pull texts and journals from your subject area. A civil engineering student reads civil engineering papers. A business analytics student writes case reviews. General English is not the goal here.

The Writing course covers:

Classes run Monday to Thursday in three-hour blocks. Subjects alternate by day and there are no Friday classes. Registration happens through the GESP coordinator, not MyMav.

Note: The Listening or Speaking course helps more with US classroom life than an IELTS speaking test ever will. Instructors focus on lecture and lab talk, not exam tasks.
