Massachusetts Institute of Technology Admission Process

Step-by-step application process is listed as follows:

  1. Create a MyMIT account to begin your application and list all the general personal and academic information as requested.
  2. Provide additional information regarding your test scores and submit your essays and statement of interest, if required.
  3. Submit your academic transcripts and ACT/SAT score cards along with a nonrefundable application fee.
  4. Provide the names of at least 2 recommenders (academic) with their email ids so that a request regarding your recommendations can be made to them.
  5. Interviews are though not a mandatory part of MIT’s application process but are definitely the most recommended one. An educational counselor of the institute will contact the students regarding the same and the interview shall be scheduled in the month of November or january, depending upon the inateck you apply for.
  6. Send all the supplementary documents like portfolio, etc. to the interest by checking about them at your student dashboard.

MIT English Proficiency Requirements

International students must demonstrate English language proficiency by providing scores of any one of the following tests given below, to be eligible for admissions at Massachusetts Institute of Technology:

Note that the minimum eligibility score for IELTS exam varies from department to department and thus shall be individually checked when submitting the score.

In addition to the TOEFL/IELTS, all the international applicants form non-native English speaking countries also need to take an English Evaluation Test (EET) during a week before their registration day at the institute. The results of this test shall direct students further regarding their written and oral communication skills and on this basis they shall be guided to take special English classes if required.

Visa Application Process

International aspirants applying to MIT must note that they need to obtain a valid passport andvisa to study in the USA from the nearest American Embassy or Consulate in their country. There are 2 kinds of visas that are valid for making a candidate eligible to enter uNited States which are namely, the F-1 Student Visa and the J-1 Exchange Visitor (student) visa.

A student receiving an I-20 form is issued an F-1 visa whereas the one receiving a DS-2019 form is given a J-1 visa. The visa is issued only to the students enrolled full-time at the institute for the upcoming academic session. Both types of visas require you to be a full-time student whenever school is in session and requires a fee of 200 to 350 USD or 180 to 220 USD for an F-1 or J-1 visa, respectively.

A student admitted to the institute can seek help regarding the visa process from the International Students Office in the month of May when most of the visas are filed for.

MIT Graduate Admissions

Admission Portal: Apply online using the GradApply online student portal except Sloan School of Management which follows its own application process.

Application Fee: 75 USD except for Sloan School of Management which requires a fee of 250 USD.
