Massachusetts Institute of Technology Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
MIT admission requirements for Indian applicants centre on academic rigour, standardised test scores and a demonstrated fit with the Institute’s problem-solving culture.
PG Requirements
- Academic: Four-year bachelor’s degree with 75% or CGPA 7.5/10 (recommended); Sloan flagship programmes typically expect 80% or CGPA 8.0/10
- English test minimum: IELTS Academic 7.0 (preferred), TOEFL iBT 100 (0-120 legacy scale), or Duolingo English Test 135; only Academic IELTS is accepted
- Standardised test: GRE required by many science and engineering departments; GMAT or GRE for Sloan MBA and Master of Finance
- Credential verification: Department-level review of Indian transcripts; some programmes accept WES evaluations, but MIT does not universally mandate it
UG Requirements
- Academic: Class 12 with 95% or above from CBSE, ICSE or state boards (recommended, reflecting the MIT admitted-student profile)
- Standardised test: SAT or ACT required for the Class of 2031 cycle
- English test: IELTS Academic 7.0 or TOEFL iBT 100 (0-120 legacy scale); strongly recommended for Indian applicants whose Class 11-12 medium was not English
Key insight: Indian applicants who completed Classes XI and XII in English-medium schools may skip the IELTS or TOEFL, but MIT admissions officers still encourage submitting a score to strengthen the file, especially for graduate applications.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology Acceptance Rate 2027
MIT reports an undergraduate acceptance rate of 4.8% for the Class of 2029, drawn from the officially published Common Data Set. Graduate acceptance rates vary sharply by department, with the Sloan MBA sitting near 19% (estimated) based on the Class of 2027 profile released this session.
| Year | Undergraduate Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2029 cycle (2025 admits) | 4.8% | Broadly flat |
| 2028 cycle (2024 admits) | 4.5% | Slight compression |
| 2027 cycle (2023 admits) | 4.7% | Steady |
[Source: MIT Common Data Set, MIT Admissions]
Indian applicants face a lower effective admit rate than the headline figure because MIT admits internationals across a shared, extremely selective pool without country quotas. Graduate admissions vary widely: engineering PhD tracks sit around 8% to 12%, while professional master’s programmes at Sloan run higher.
Reality check: A 4.8% headline masks a much thinner slice for Indian first-year applicants; competitive files at MIT typically pair top JEE Advanced or Class 12 outcomes with sustained research or Olympiad-level results in mathematics or physics.

[Source: QS, Collegedunia Study Abroad; fees market-median from institutional pages]
MIT edges the peer set on QS rank, subject-level breadth and Sloan analytics leadership; the trade-off is Cambridge-area cost of living, which runs higher than Stanford’s Palo Alto or CMU’s Pittsburgh comparators.
MIT is the right fit for Indian students who have already peaked academically at Class 12 or bachelor’s level and want the strongest engineering, computer science or Sloan analytics ecosystem in the world. On a five-year view the tuition and living cost of roughly USD 100,000 per year against a median MS salary of USD 150,000 delivers a favourable payback, further sharpened for STEM graduates by the 36-month OPT window that lengthens the US earning runway.
It is not the right pick for applicants seeking a cheaper credential or a wider spread of humanities and social science offerings, and Class 12 candidates below the 90% band should treat the University of Toronto or the University of British Columbia as more realistic alternatives.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology FAQs
Ques. What is the application fee at MIT and can Indian applicants get a waiver?
Ans. MIT charges a USD 75 application fee for undergraduate first-year applicants and USD 90 to USD 250 across graduate departments, with Sloan MBA at the top end. Fee waivers are available for undergraduate applicants who demonstrate financial hardship, requested inside the Common Application or MyMIT portal. Graduate fee waivers are rarer and administered department-by-department, with priority given to applicants from low-income backgrounds and specific fellowship-linked programmes.
Ques. Does MIT accept Indian three-year bachelor’s degrees for master’s admission?
Ans. MIT graduate departments evaluate Indian three-year bachelor’s degrees on a case-by-case basis, and many engineering and science programmes prefer a four-year BE or BTech. Applicants with a three-year BSc or BA are often asked to complete either an MSc in India or a US bridging year before applying. Sloan MBA and Master of Finance historically accept three-year commerce degrees when paired with quantitative work experience.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time during their MIT programme?
Ans. F-1 visa holders at MIT may work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during term and 40 hours during holidays, without additional authorisation. Off-campus employment requires Curricular Practical Training (CPT) for internships tied to coursework, or Optional Practical Training (OPT) after one full academic year. Typical on-campus roles include teaching assistantships, research assistantships and library or lab positions paying USD 18 to USD 30 per hour.
Ques. Is GRE mandatory for MIT graduate applications from Indian students?
Ans. GRE requirements at MIT vary by department for the 2027 cycle. Electrical Engineering and Computer Science currently makes GRE optional, while Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautics and most PhD tracks in physical sciences still require it. Sloan MBA and Master of Finance accept either GRE or GMAT, and Master of Business Analytics accepts both. Always check the specific programme page before applying, as MIT departments update test policies each cycle.
Ques. Which Indian banks offer education loans for MIT admits?
Ans. MIT admission letters carry weight with all major Indian lenders. HDFC Credila, SBI Global Ed-Vantage, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank and Avanse routinely finance MIT-bound students up to INR 1.5 crore without collateral for graduate programmes and up to INR 2 crore with collateral. Interest rates for MIT-bound applicants sit at the lower end of the international-education band, given the recognised-university tag and consistent high-earning outcomes.
Ques. Does MIT interview international applicants before admission?
Ans. MIT undergraduate applicants are matched with an Educational Counsellor (EC) for an alumni interview where available, and Indian applicants are often connected with a Mumbai, Delhi or Bengaluru-based alumnus. Sloan MBA runs mandatory interviews for shortlisted candidates, conducted virtually or on-campus, and Master of Finance requires a HireVue video interview. Most engineering PhD programmes conduct faculty-led interviews with shortlisted candidates before final decisions.
Ques. Can Indian applicants defer their MIT admission by a year?
Ans. MIT permits undergraduate deferrals for one year on a case-by-case basis, typically for national service, family circumstances or well-defined gap-year projects. Graduate deferrals are handled by the admitting department and are generally granted only for compelling professional or personal reasons. Deferral requests must be submitted alongside the enrolment acceptance, and MIT reserves the right to require reapplication for gaps longer than one year.
Ques. What documents does MIT require for transcript verification from Indian universities?
Ans. MIT graduate departments accept scanned transcripts uploaded to the application portal during initial review, with officially attested hard copies required after admission. Indian applicants must submit consolidated marksheets for all semesters, provisional or final degree certificates, and a rank or grading scheme explanation from the issuing university. Some departments accept WES evaluations to speed up processing, though MIT does not universally require them across all programmes.

Most of the students enrolled at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology work while studying, irrespective of their financial needs. On-campus employment at MIT is usually found in labs, department centers, communities as well as offices. Students enrolled in any of the MIT programs can apply and get the on-campus jobs. It is highly encouraged that a student finds a job role that aligns with their interests and future aspirations.
The university has its own job board, which is offered free of charge to students taking admission at MIT USA. Student finance services, which look after the job board, do not run a verification or screening on the employers or students. It is, hence, suggested that both employers and work-study aspirants to request reference information from each other.
International students are not eligible for the federal work-study programs, resulting in a lack of opportunities for off-campus work study jobs.
