Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Ques. I have an I-20 with a program start date of Fall 2020, September 9, but I am unable to come to the US and start my program. Can I begin my program through online courses?

Yes, you can begin your studies by taking online courses remotely. You must contact your admitting unit to defer your I-20 form to an upcoming term. They will send you an updated I-20 form that would allow you to come to the US and continue your studies in a future term. Any classes that you attend, and grades that you get in the Fall 2020 term, will be counted towards academic progress and entered on your DePaul transcript as a permanent record.

Ques. I want to begin my studies online at DePaul for my first term. What to do if I cannot get an F1 visa to come study in Chicago later on?

DePaul University will give back 50 percent of the tuition that you have already paid if all of the following criteria are met. You must:

  1. Provide concrete evidence of three attempts to obtain a visa to study in the United States in the form of properly documented visa denials. Denials must be due to reasons other than your failure to submit the required documentation as part of your visa application.
  2. Not be on academic probation.
  3. Reside outside of the US, require an F1 (student) visa to study in person in the US, and not have such a visa during summer 2020 and/or fall 2020 term.
  4. Be enrolled at DePaul University for the first time in either Summer 2020 or Fall 2020, with all of your courses being held remotely (online).

Ques. I want to secure housing for Fall 2020 but I’m worried I won’t be able to get a visa to come. Will I get a refund for the housing prepayment if my F1 (student) visa application is denied?

If you are thinking to attend DePaul University, and have applied for an F1 visa but are denied for reasons other than failure to submit proper documentation, then you may apply for the housing cancellation charge. You will be refunded your $400 prepayment fee. DePaul Housing must get your visa denial paperwork before the start of your housing agreement.

Ques. Will my ISO health insurance coverage cover expenses associated with COVID-19?

ISO covers medically necessary health care costs related to testing and treatment of infectious diseases and medical conditions, including COVID-19.

Ques. I obtained a student visa but am concerned about travel restrictions. What should I do?

Check the travel and visa restrictions that may be in place at the time you are planning to travel. The situation is changing daily. If you are currently outside the US or plan to travel outside the US, we recommend that you continue to monitor the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)'s travel updates.
