With a current student population of 5,113 (59% female and 41% male), University of Detroit Mercy offers admission to students across the globe in more than 100 academic degrees and programs including popular programs like nursing, Business, and biology and its related fields. In the fall of 2019, over 17% of admitted students were international students. International students seeking admission at UDM should note the following:

  • Except for the nursing program, the University does not compulsorily require non-native English language speakers to show proficiency in English language before the offer of admission.
  • Most graduate programs like MBA, Applied Data Science, etc., offer flexible classes where students can take classes fully online or on the McNichols Campus in Detroit or as a combination.
  • Flexible full-time or part-time enrollment, hybrid or face-to-face format is available for most graduate programs like the Family Nurse Practitioner program and others
  • Graduate programs are self-paced. Students can finish the program in one year
  • University of Detroit Mercy MBA program is among the top 25 Management programs in the United States
  • Graduate Assistantship is available for graduate students.

Admission Deadline

Admission deadlines for international applicants are different from domestic applicants. International applicants are not offered early decision admissions. The deadlines to apply as international UG and PG applications are mentioned below

  • July 1 for Fall Term
  • November 15 for Winter Term
  • March 30 for Spring/Summer Term

The international students willing to study in the US are required to meet the minimum requirements to be considered for admission at the University. Aside from the minimum requirements, applicants are advised to ensure they meet the program’s additional requirements.

Admission Requirements: The minimum admission requirements for international students at the University of Detroit Mercy are: 

  • Certificates Evaluation Report (Course-by-Course for transfer students and graduate students; and Documents-by-documents for undergraduates)
  • A current résumé or curriculum vitae (optional for undergraduate applicants and transfer students)
  • A statement of financial support form from a sponsor or an official financial statement with a balance above the total amount to cover the first year of study which includes tuition and living expenses
  • A copy of the information pages of the applicant’s passport

Note:

  • Applicants are advised to make use of a recognized United States-based educational credential evaluation service, such as the World Education Services (WES) or the Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE).
  • Freshmen applicants are advised to order for the Document-by-Document Report if using WES and the General Report with Grade Average if using the ECE
  • Transfer students and graduate applicants with previous foreign college coursework are required to order for the course-by-course report no matter the type of credential evaluator used.

  • Financial statements and a copy of the information page of the passport are only required for the issuance of I-20 to apply for a student visa after the offer of admission has been made to the students. Therefore it is not a compulsory admission prerequisite.
  • The official financial statement and the statement of financial support form must not be dated more than three months before the desired start term
  • The university accepts a financial statement with balance less than the total annual cost of study for the first year if the applicant is currently working in the United States
  • A Bachelor's degree from a foreign university will be considered IF determined completed as U.S. equivalent on an official, course-by-course/detailed evaluation report prepared by World Education Services (WES) or Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE)
  • Only applicants who have satisfied all the necessary admission requirements will be invited to campus for an interview with the Selection Committee members. The student's overall application, essay, and performance in the interview are used to determine admission decisions.

English Proficiency Test Score for International Students

  • The University of Detroit Mercy admission does not have a strict English language policy for international students but students who are non-native speakers of English are required to possess Basic English communication skills related to immediate needs.
  • For admission into science and engineering programs, the admission decision is made based on the academic grades and TOEFL/IELTS scores submitted. However, in the absence of an English language test, admitted students will be required to take the Accuplacer ESL Test upon arriving at Detroit Mercy
  • If student’s score in ESL placement test indicate lack of proficiency in English language, students will be required to enroll in the American Language and Culture Program (ALCP), English as a Second Language preparation program at Detroit Mercy
  • Applicants for nursing programs are required to demonstrate a good knowledge of the English language by obtaining a minimum of 83 on TOEFL IBT administered by the Educational Testing Service

Visa Process for International Applicants

  • Accepted applicants are issued Form I-20 for a student visa to study in the USA on submission of the following documents:
    • Submit a supporting bank letter
    • Certification of Finances
    • A copy of Passport or national ID
  • Apply for F-1 Visa
  • Pay SEVIS I-901 Fee
  • Schedule visa interview

Note: To obtain a student visa, an applicant needs to present a passport, Form I-20, evidence of adequate financial support, and academic credentials

Undergraduate Admission Requirements

Admission Requirements: Freshman applicants are required to submit the following:

  • University of Detroit Mercy application
  • Official Academic records and transcripts (plus the official English translated copies) from all secondary institutions or high schools attended).
  • ACT or SAT scores
  • A writing sample of at least 250 words on a topic of the applicant’s choice
  • Letter of recommendation

The University of Detroit Mercy Transfer Student Requirements

An applicant is regarded as a transfer students if he/she has earned 24 or more college-level credits or more semester hours of transferable credit with required GPA (grade point average) of 2.0 (on a scale of 4.0) or a grade of C and above or 50% and above from another university or college.
